We are official through night 1 of Wrestlemania 36!!! There were some surprise winners and some that most of us thought would be victorious. With all of that being said there were a lot of things to be learned by those decisions. These are the 10 things that we learned after night one of Wrestlemania 36.
10.) The WWE MIGHT start FINALLY taking the Women’s Tag Team Championships seriously
One of the bright spots of the night, in my opinion, is that Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross captured the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. After months of the Kabuki Warriors holding the titles hostage, we finally have champions that might actually defend them.
Asuka and Kairi Sane are very talented and are great performers but let’s not kid ourselves their run was “okay” at best. Alexa and Nikki will actually benefit from having the belts more and be able to defend them since they have been booked like an actual tag team for months now.
I think we all can agree that Asuka’s much better off as a singles competitor than a tag wrestler. As for Kairi Sane, she’s not as accomplished as Asuka but its still early in her career and her best days are still ahead of her. Now here is the question: Will WWE finally book these titles seriously? I don’t know that answer. The fact they have not booked them as anything but props since the debut of them at Evolution should make you skeptical. But I’m going to take the high road here and say we are FINALLY going to be able to take the Women’s Tag Team Division seriously!!!!
9.) The Elias and Baron Corbin feud seems to be far from over
Elias and Baron Corbin, in my opinion, are two of the brightest young stars the WWE has. The way they book each of these guys has been questionable at best. Elias has been switched from heel (which he is much more effective at IMO) to babyface it seems like 10 times since being moved up to the main roster. He has the look, gimmick, mic skills, and in-ring talent to be a top guy in WWE but for some reason, WWE has not pulled the trigger.
The same can be said for Baron Corbin. Although he is in his best natural position as a heel his booking has also been very questionable. Debuting on the main roster then winning the Andre the Giant Battle Royal, then he won the Money in the Bank Briefcase (only to lose it before being able to even cash it in), then won King of the Ring to only be fed to Roman Reigns in a feud filled with dog food and a feud that lasted WAY too long. WWE has a chance to use two of their best young talents to build a multiple month feud that will work out long term for both superstars.
Both can hold their own on the mic. The promos in a long term feud between these two could be very good. The mind games could be as well. From Elias’s songs about Corbin to Corbin interrupting him and writing songs of his own trolling Elias could make for very entertaining tv. I can only hope WWE lets these two shine and show they both have what it takes to be main event talent. Time will tell but it looks like we will find out as this feud looks like it’s just begun.
8.) WWE appears to be behind Sami Zayn and The Artist Collective
After Cesaro defeated Drew Gulak on the Wrestlemania kickoff show and Sami Zayn defeated Daniel Bryan later in the night it seems WWE is FINALLY getting behind Sami Zayn and The Artist Collective.
Sami Zayn, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Cesaro have all been booked AWFUL for the most part through their WWE careers. All 3 men have unlimited potential if WWE allowed them to showcase all of their skills. After the events of the first night of Wrestlemania, we might finally get to see it. Sami Zayn got a great win over an established star Daniel Bryan and Cesaro got a strong victory over a rising talent in Drew Gulak. Shinsuke is still on the back burner as of right now but it’ll be interesting how long it stays that way considering how damn good he is in the ring.
I assume there will be some tension amongst the group at some point in the future but for now, this group has been hitting on all levels. From Zayn marking out to Nakamura’s entrance, to Zayns great promos and Cesaro doing great things in the ring (the no hands spinning move he hit on Gulak was awesome). It seems WWE has finally gotten behind these 3 superstars and it’s about time. Let’s just hope it continues as the potential of these guys as a group and individually is unlimited.
7.) Becky Lynch apparently isn’t going anywhere …. For now….
How many of you were shocked at the outcome of the Shayna Bayzler and Becky Lynch match? Me too. How many of you were 100 percent sure Shayna was going over. Yup me too. Well here is what happened. Becky was scheduled (along with Seth Rollins) were expected to be taken off tv after their Wrestlemania matches so they could both get married.
This is the reason most of us thought Shayna would win. Well, unfortunately, we have this silly little thing called the coronavirus going on so I don’t think Becky and Seth will be getting married for at least a few more months. That is most likely the reason why this decision is made cause it makes no sense for Becky to lose the title and chase it only for a month before going away shortly after so then she can then go get married. What’s next for Becky and how can she lose the belt to Shayna in the future to where it makes sense. Glad you asked because another reason she didn’t lose the belt tonight was…….
6.) Vince isn’t sold on Shayna Bayzler….. YET
With the surprise of Becky Lynch winning as stated above comes a lot of questions. Most of those I answered above. But I promised to tell you another reason why Shayna isn’t champion and its because Vince isn’t sold on her yet. The lackluster crowd reaction she got (remember those days when we had a crowd?), the cringing promos she cuts and just the way she was being booked leading up to this (although she still went over other female talents) it never really screamed SHAYNA CAN BEAT BECKY. How can they fix it you ask?
Have Shayna earn a spot against Becky at let’s say Summerslam in August. Have them have a rematch and have a returning Ronda Rousey interfere in the match to help her fellow MMA turn WWE star win the championship. Ronda’s presence with Shayna will give her a nice rub due to how well known Rousey is and you can use this based on Rousey’s old history with Lynch from last year’s Wrestlemania where Rousey lost the belt to Becky in controversial fashion.
With all this, you can also continue to plant the seeds toward a potential match between Rousey and Lynch at let’s say …. WRESTLEMANIA 37 in LA! Who knows if Shayna gets the support of the higher-ups in WWE you could easily turn that into a triple threat match. Time will tell if Vince ever gets behind Shayna but here is me hoping it does happen at some point before it’s too late.
5.) The Miz and John Morrison are going to be Smackdown Tag Team Champions for a long time
Since The Miz and John Morrison have teamed back up since Morrisons return to WWE all they have done is win. Entertain. Win. Oh yeah did I mention win? Miz and Morrison defeated every single team Smackdown had to offer in the Elimination Chamber and have defeated the two teams widely regarded as two of the best teams on the planet in The New Day and The Uso’s multiple times.
What does that tell me?
It tells me the plan is for them to have those titles for a long time. They have breezed through all the teams on Smackdown in a short amount of time. I expect whenever there is a team from the upcoming Superstar Shake-Up (who knows when that will happen now) or another thrown together tag-team that they will end up being the ones to eventually take the belts off of them. But I don’t see that happening for quite a long time. Miz and Morrison Hey Hey Ho Ho for the win! BE JEALOUS!!!!!!
4.) Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins are both badass and the future of Raw is in fantastic hands
I know this might not be news to die-hard wrestling fans. But let’s take a minute to appreciate what these two guys did tonight. They went from having all the keyboard warriors on twitter pissed to happy within 5 minutes. When Seth used the bell on Owens and the match was “over” via DQ everyone was mad.
OMG, this was horrible. Another terrible booking decision. OMG, WHAT A JOKE.
These are some of the nicer things people were saying. But what did these guys do, Kevin calls Seth a little bitch and then they put on what arguably was the best match of the night. Kevin Owens spot off of the Wrestlemania sign onto Seth while he’s on the announce table will be the spot I most remember from this night as these two guys did burn it down ( pun intended).
You look at the history of both men. Kevin Owens is great on the mic, had arguably the best Universal Title run and is so good in the ring for a dude his size it’s crazy. Then you have Seth who has won damn near every title WWE has to offer, is one the best wrestlers on the planet and has the ability to take nothing and make it awesome (remember how upset most people were with the Brock and Reigns match at Mania a few years ago until Seth cashed in).
With these two guys leading Raw into the future us wrestling fans should feel great for what the future holds not just for these two but for Monday Night Raw period.
3.) Braun Strowman is a placeholder Universal Champion
Let’s be honest, yeah it was cool to see Braun Strowman win the Universal Championship. But we all know this only happened because Roman Reigns could not compete due to health concerns (rightfully so).
The good thing for Braun is he will have the fact he defeated a WWE legend like Goldberg on his resume which is a good thing to have. But at the end of the day, we know what the end result of this is going to be. Roman Reigns winning the Universal Championship at Summerslam or whichever PPV WWE has next.
Could WWE finally book Braun as the monster that he should have been booked as in the first place?
I doubt it.
The way they have booked him as somewhat as a comedy act (dancing with New Day) and losing the Intercontinental Championship just a few weeks after finally winning his first singles title shows that this move is going to be temporary. Like I said congratulations to Braun for winning his first Universal Championship over Goldberg … Goldberg…
This leads me to what I learned about WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg tonight….
2.) The wrestling career of Goldberg is over
Goldberg has had a great and successful career both in WCW and in WWE but it appears that it has reached its end. The inability of Goldberg to go more than 2 minutes in a match because he is out of breath and the fact he can’t even hit a spear or deliver a jackhammer with force another (see jackhammer on The Fiend from SuperShowdown if you need an example).
The fact WWE didn’t trust Goldberg to beat Strowman and just sit at home for a few months and then lose to Roman at the next possible PPV is very telling. I respect Goldberg and all that he has accomplished in his career even though he was never my favorite by any means. I’m glad I got to live through the prime of his career and see the many great matches he has had.
I look forward to hopefully seeing more young full-time talent get more high profile spots in the future and hopefully Goldberg losing to Braun helps Braun’s career in the short and long term. Thank you, Goldberg, for what you have done but your time is now over. WHOS NEXT you ask? It’s more like WHATS NEXT?
The answer to that is retirement. I wish you nothing but the best. Goldberg enjoy your life and I wish you nothing but the best.
The Undertaker and AJ Styles stole the show on night 1 of Wrestlemania 36
We all wondered, what the hell is a Boneyard Match? Well, what we learned was it was basically the same thing as a graveyard match. The match was done to perfection. It had a horror movie type vibe to it where Styles had multiple spots where he looked great and you got to see multiple phases of The Deadman.
First, he rolled up on his motorcycle in American Badass mode. Then when things weren’t going his way he was able to turn back into what we all will are most familiar with him as and that’s The Undertaker. This match had action, trash talk, and multiple great spots. The Undertaker continuing to tell AJ you put up a hell of a fight over and over was meant to put AJ over as more of a badass (as if he needs it) but it worked.
AJ came out of this looking strong and The Undertaker comes out of this showing he still is one of the best come Wrestlemania time and that he still got what it takes.
Could this lead to maybe one more match for the Phenom next year at Wrestlemania 37 in LA against.?
Oh, I don’t know STING!!
Yes yes they are both old and the match would be probably awful but the entrances alone would be worth it and it could be both their retirement matches and you can send both off properly since this is a match people have wanted to see for many many years.
As for AJ Styles, I expect him to stay right up near the top of the Monday Night Raw card. The guy is one of the best the world has to offer and I for one am glad to have been able to witness this tonight. These are two of the greatest performers in the history of wrestling and it was a pleasure watching them tonight.
They made the best of a bad situation and did a fantastic job entertaining us through these tough times we are going through in the world right now. Hats off to you both that match was truly phenomenal.
Remember part 2 of Wrestlemania 36 is tomorrow night and I will be back tomorrow with the things I learned from tomorrow night’s action.
