AEW continues it’s winning streak over NXT.
The results are in and AEW has now won the weekly rating against NXT on Wednesday night for the third consecutive week. AEW had 773,000 viewers to NXT”s 707,000 viewers,. However, combined both shows put up more viewers than the third hour of WWE Monday Night Raw. The new rival wrestling promotion AEW is enjoying some much-needed momentum attracting viewers to their brand. While NXT continues to lose, the brand continues to put together some great matches, and even though the gap was not as big as last week’s numbers, Vince and Triple H have to be concerned. While the Khans and Cody have to be gaining confidence.
Here are the highlights from each show.
NXT Womens Champion Io Shirai & Texan Nox def Candice Lerae & Dakota Kai.
Dakota Kai attacks Shirai for second time as Shirai was making her entrance to the ring. This match started off with some great action with all 4 competitors getting in a brawl,. Both teams worked so well together. This match delivered, but what happened at the end was very interesting. Kai tagged in her partner the Poison Pixie then left Lerae to fight all alone. Shirai would hit the moonsault on Lerae and pinned her for the victory.
Keith Lee calls out Karrion Kross.
The Limitless One NXT Champion Keith Lee was furious about what Karrion Kross did to his friend and rival Dijakovic. Lee proceeded to call Kross out, only to have Cameron Grimes come out. Grimes took a vicious beating for his trouble. Then Scarlett came out, and Kross appeared on the screen issuing his own message, that he wants an NXT Title opportunity against Lee.
Dexter Lumis def. Timothy Thatcher and Finn Balor in a Triple Threat Match to earn a spot in the North American Title Match at TakeOver XXX
Dexter Lumis was very impressive in this match. Timothy Thatcher brought his style of wrestling, while The Prince Finn Balor has shown why he is the standard-bearer for NXT. Balor’s hit the Coup de Grace on Thatcher, but the pinball attempt would be broken up by Thatcher’s grapevine ankle lock. But then Lumis came in and locked the “Professor of Pain” in his signature Kata Gatame submission hold to get the win in this contest.
Cody Rhodes def. Warhorse (AEW TNT Championship)
This was a fantastic match from start to finish. If you follow wrestling then you realize just how great of a wrestler Cody Rhodes is. But with that being said I came away impressed by Warhorse, a guy who has been popular on the Indy wrestling scene for a long time. The guy is extremely talented.,The spot where Warhorse double stomps Cody from the apron was tremendous. Cody with Arn Anderson (I’m such a big fan of the Enforcer as his coach) by his side wins with the figure-four leg lock.
After the match the Dark Order attack and beat Warhorse and Cody down. Arn is in the ring ready to face them when Matt Cardona shows up and takes out the Dark Order’s Reynolds and Silver. Cody and Cardona are close in real life so this makes sense. This was a really cool surprise!
Darby Allin & Jon Moxley def. Brian Cage & Ricky Starks.(Tornado Tag Team Match)
Darby Allin surprises both Cage and Starks by flying off the stage to attack Taz’s team of the FTW Champion Cage and the charismatic Starks. This was a fun and physical match to watch, each wrestler got some great offense in. But in the end, it was the Coffin Drop/ Paradigm Shift combo taking Cage out. Allin then blasts Starks with a skateboard full of thumbtacks. Mox has Cage in a cross armbar over the bottom rope, Allin then came off the top rope with a double-stomp to Starks on the tack-studded skateboard and Allin and Moxley go on to win the match.
While I don’t like calling this Wednesday night battle a war, it seems to be a fun narrative to throw around. AEW and NXT have hit strides and have gone back and forth over the last two months. So this is still anyone’s ball-game on Wednesday night’s. However, there is no denying that AEW is enjoying their momentum as they continue to win against NXT.
With that being said ]look for NXT to ramp up the storylines and their matches leading up to the Takeover XXX.
AEW continues to find ways to surprise fans with big names coming in. First FTR and now Matt Cardona who have already established and proven to be stars that can help the brand make money.
It is definitely an interesting time in the business.. What a fun and great time to be a fan!! It is okay to watch and enjoy both shows as more wrestling is never a bad thing however, I do respect the brand loyalists on both sides.
