We have learned that Little Richard has passed away at the age of 87. The famed rock n’ roller passed away Saturday, May 9th. The singer was 87.
Little Richard was one of the founding fathers of Rock N’ Roll Music. His flamboyant and joyful style and persona captivated the world.
Little Richard’s son Danny Jones Penniman confirmed the news about the famous legend’s death. Richard became a household name in the music industry. First with his 1956 hit “ Tutti Frutti.” The hit songs then just kept on coming for the superstar musician and songwriter. “Long Tall Sally” in that same year. “Good Golly Miss Molly” in 1958.
Richard was known for his piano-driven style of playing. He would influence generations of singers and musicians to come over the years. One famous artist was Sir Elton John.
Rock bands such as Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Everly Brothers have covered Richard’s songs.
He was discovered after performing at the Tick-Tock Club in Macon, Georgia, and winning a local talent show. Richard landed a deal with RCA in 1951.
Little Richard was a cornerstone of music as we know it today, everyone talks Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Fats Domino. Rightfully so, but Little Richard was as much a big star as those guys were. It’s not fair just to classify his style as simply as Rock N’ Roll. But early R&B music as well.
