Atletico Madrid have met with Edinson Cavani’s representatives in France over a free transfer to the club, which will see Cavani link up with fellow Uruguayan international Luis Suarez. Suarez has joined Atletico after leaving Barcelona by mutual consent, whereas Cavani has been without a club since the end of last season due to not signing a new contract with PSG.
The 33 year old joined PSG 7 years ago and has gone on to win multiple trophies with the French outfit, including 6 Ligue 1 titles and a further 13 cup competitions. Cavani scored 200 goals in 301 games during his time in the French capital and became one of Europe’s most lethal strikers.
Atletico have proposed a two year deal for the forward which will see the striker link up with fellow countrymen Luis Suarez and possibly create one of the most deadly strike partnerships in La Liga. Atletico have also shown interest in another Uruguayan international in the shape of Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira, a proposed deal has been tabled for the 24 year old which would see him join the club but see Thomas Partey go the other way.
Atletico have been looking for the killer instinct inside the box since the departure of Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona last summer. The French man left a huge hole up front which Atletico struggled to fill, finishing 3rd in La Liga last season joint on points with 4th place Sevilla.
Cavani will demand a high wage but manager Diego Simeone has identified the striker as the ideal target to push Atletico towards challenging for the league title. Cavani had spent a large chunk of lockdown in his native Uruguay, but has now been preparing himself physically for a return to football.
