Breaking news out of Arlington, Texas today. Cowboys have learned that quarterback Dak Prescott will sign his franchise tender. The franchise tender is worth $31.4M this season. This will place Dak amongst the top 5 paid at his position.
This is big for the Cowboys. Rumors have been swirling all offseason have had Prescott threatening to holdout if he didn’t get a new deal. Rumors of him turning down a massive 5 year $175M contract wasn’t looking good for either party. The reports were that his camp was looking for Prescott to make $45M a season. The Cowboys and Dak Prescott have until sometime after the end of July to agree on a contract extension.
Having Prescott sign on Monday means that the Cowboys can have a year to truly evaluate Prescott and see how he looks in Mike McCarthy’s offense. In addition to signing a Super Bowl-winning coach in McCarthy. The Cowboys keep a QB that lead them to 2 playoff appearances including a postseason win against the Seattle Seahawks in 2018. Therefore putting the Cowboys in a win-win situation.
In addition to the Dak signing the franchise tag. The Cowboys have loaded the offense around Prescott with nothing but talent. They drafted WR CeeDee Lamb in the first round to pair with the already loaded offense that features Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Gallup, and the recently resigned Amari Cooper. Therefore the Cowboys get their starting QB and sign a boatload of talent. The expectations in Dallas should be sky high this season and Prescott should look to put his money where his mouth is and deliver.
