Hey everyone its Josh from DeBord Room, Wednesday Night War, and the RSH Champion of Regularly Scheduled Hostilities. Each week I will do NFL picks and give a brief breakdown of each game. I will do this all year long in hopes that I can at least have a 500 record or above. Enough about me let’s get ready for some football and check out my predictions for Week 1 of the NFL season.
Thursday, Sept. 10
Houston at Kansas City, 8:20 p.m.
Patrick Mahomes vs Deshaun Watson. Two guys who got paid this offseason and are both ready to show they are worth the money and I think they both will. I expect this to be a close game up until the end as I feel Kansas City just has the superior offense and Houston’s defense will only be able to contain Mahomes so long. Tyreek Hill goes off in this game and puts the game to bed in the early 4th quarter as Kansas City holds off Houston.
Josh’s Pick: KC 27-17
Sunday, Sept. 13
Seattle at Atlanta, 1 p.m.
This is a game that I think will be close until about the 3rd quarter. Seattle has weapons all over the field for Russell Wilson (finally) and I think that despite a great statistical game from Matt Ryan (I’d say 320 yards, 2 TDs) Seattle should roll here. Too many weapons to contain and too much Russell Wilson for poor Dan Quinn as his job security goes down another peg after this blowout loss.
Josh’s Pick: Seattle 31-17
Cleveland at Baltimore, 1 p.m.
Upset pick of the week!!! THE BROWNIES!! Yes yes, scoff if you want. But, if you think about it it’s honestly not that crazy. They split with Baltimore last year and addressed a lot of their needs in the offseason (O-Line, Secondary, Head Coach). I think Baltimore comes out and doesn’t take the Browns seriously until its too late. Baker has a huge game (300 yards 2 touchdowns) against that stacked Ravens defense and despite Lamar putting on a show (350 total yards, 2 TD) the Browns leave Baltimore with the upset win after Nick Chubb runs in a late TD in the 4th.
Josh’s Pick: Cleveland wins 30-24
New York Jets at Buffalo, 1 p.m.
The Jets….. Yeah, I mean I technically have to pick this game because it’s on the schedule, but does anyone expect anything out of the Jets? Josh Allen will end up looking like Tom Brady in his prime in this game (300 total yards, 3 TD) and the Jets will struggle to put up points as they have little to no weapons on offense and despite their defense being solid they will struggle with being put in bad field position situations. Darnold will be bad (2 ints, fumble) and the Jets get blown out (the first of many) Week 1.
Josh’s Pick: Bills 28-6
Las Vegas at Carolina, 1 p.m.
Teddy Bridgewater will make his debut as the QB for the Carolina Panthers and somehow despite all the rumors Derek Carr is still the QB of the now Las Vegas Raiders. This is going to be the most underrated game of the day. Two teams who are kind of in the same situations (Dominate RB, ok defense, and still trying to figure out long term QB). I will give this round to the Carolina Panthers. Being able to run the option with Bridgewater and McCaffrey is going to be damn near impossible to stop IMO. Carr will have an okay game (240 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) but the ground game will be too much for the Raiders as McCaffrey will get 100 yards plus rushing, 50 yards plus receiving, and 3 total touchdowns as the Panthers roll and get the Matt Rhule era started off right.
Josh’s Pick: Panthers win 30-17
Chicago at Detroit, 1 p.m.
Mitch Trubisky is on the hot seat. After bringing in Nick Foles in the offseason Mitch was still able to hold onto his starting QB job. This game will show you the Bears made a good choice. I think Mitch will light up Detroit’s terrible secondary as Allen Robinson will have over 120 yards receiving and Anthony Miller will have close to 100 yards as well. Mitch will play well (250 total yards, 3 touchdowns) and make no mistakes which is all he really needs to not to. The Bears defense gives Stafford fits the whole game (Mack 2 sacks) and the Bears roll onto what they hope to be one of the many well-played games this year by Mitch.
Josh’s Pick: Bears win 24-13
Indianapolis at Jacksonville, 1 p.m.
Jacksonville has the worst roster in the NFL by far. Not going to waste much of your time on this one. Colts win. Colts win big. Jacksonville is…. Awful. Colts dominate. Johnathon Taylor gets 100 yards and his first NFL touchdown in the win.
Josh’s pick: Colts 24-3
Green Bay at Minnesota, 1 p.m.
The NFC North was the toughest division for me this year. I just don’t know what to expect from each team. But, I’ll try. This feels like the Aaron Rodgers “How in the blue hell do you draft Jordan Love instead of me a weapon” game. I think Rodgers comes out throws for over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns! I expect Aaron Jones to struggle with Minnesota’s front 7 which will put the pressure on Rodgers to throw the ball a lot. Kirk Cousins (279 yards 2 touchdowns) and rookie WR Justin Jefferson (5 catches 105 yards TD) put up a fight until the end but Green Bay ultimately hangs on. Missed field goal costs the Vikings the win here.
Josh’s Pick: Green Bay 30-28
Miami at New England, 1 p.m.
Tom Brady out. Cam Newton in. Ryan Fitzpatrick out. Tua…. Ryan Fitzpatrick back in. I have no earthly idea why Tua isn’t starting week one but as a Patriots fan, I’m very happy he isn’t. This is going to be one of those vintage games between these two as it will go down to the wire. Fitzpatrick will have a respectable game (230 yards, 2 touchdowns, 2 INT) but the new Patriots QB Cam Newton comes out hot (320 yards, 3 total touchdowns) and show’s why everyone made a mistake not taking a chance on him this offseason. N’Keal Harry will have his best career game (4 catches 90 yards 1 TD) and the Patriots defense will be in Fitzpatrick’s face all day (4 plus sacks) as Cam will run in the go-ahead touchdown at the end of the 4th to give the Patriots the week 1 win.
Josh’s Pick: New England 27-24
Philadelphia at Washington, 1 p.m.
Carson Wentz is healthy (for now) and has healthy weapons (for now). The Washington Football Team has Dwayne Haskins which is why they are in trouble this year. I think Haskins struggles badly in this game (179 yards total 3 turnovers) and that Miles Sanders (135 total yards 2 touchdowns) dominates on the ground for the Eagles and that’s what determines the winner in this game. Alex Smith is in the game by the 4th in this one as Rivera already doubts why Haskins is starting.
Josh’s Pick: Eagles 24-9
Los Angeles Chargers at Cincinnati, 4:05 p.m.
My sleeper playoff team the Cincinnati Bengals! They will get off to a 1-0 start this year. Chargers are coming into the year with a new QB (Tyrod Taylor) missing key players (Derwin James, Mike Williams), and a lame-duck head coach (I think he’ll be gone after this year anyway). The Bengals on the other hand have a new QB in first overall pick, Joe Burrow! Burrow has a good first game as a pro as he throws for 268 yards and 2 touchdowns including one to his top receiver Tyler Boyd (89 yards, TD). Joe Mixon (one of the best backs in the league) will have 125 yards on the ground and add a touchdown. Good start for Burrow and bad once again for Taylor.
Josh’s Pick: Bengals 28-16
Tampa Bay at New Orleans, 4:25 p.m.
Tom Brady is in Tampa Bay! The biggest news of the whole offseason and what a treat we get Brady vs Brees on week 1! I expect a close game in this one due more to the fact that both teams have better defenses than people give them credit for. I think Brady and his new toys on offense will struggle the first few weeks (team chemistry is a real thing people). Brees will have his usual solid game (245 yards, 2 TDS) and Brady will be good as well (278 Yards 2 TD). The game will be decided on a Rob Gronkowski fumble on what would have been a game-winning drive for the Bucs. Marcus Lattimore punches the ball out and Cameron Jordan recovers to clinch a win for the Saints in week 1.
Josh’s Pick: Saints 28-23
Arizona at San Francisco, 4:25 p.m.
The Kyler Murray hype train is going strong headed into this year! After adding WR DeAndre Hopkins and with a year of experience under his belt Murray has a chance to get Arizona back to the playoffs in only his second year in the league. But they are in a stacked division led by San Francisco. Fresh off a heartbreaking loss in the Super Bowl to Kansas City I expect San Fran to struggle the first few weeks. That Super Bowl hangover is a real thing. Plus, the Cardinals are coming in pumped up and ready to go after their great offseason. Kyler puts up over 300 total yards and 3 Total TD’s. Hopkins tops 100 yards in his first game and Kenyan Drake adds a receiving TD late in the game as Arizona closes it out. Jimmy G (209 yards TD, 2 INT) struggles and despite a strong team effort running the ball (145 yards rushing), the 49ers drop their home opener as the Cardinals hype increases going into week 2.
Josh’s Pick: Arizona 26-17
Dallas at Los Angeles, 8:20 p.m. (Sunday Night Football)
This game is going to be ugly… for the Rams. Dak Prescott (fresh off not getting the new contract he wanted) I think is going to have his best year this year and it starts with this game. Dallas will struggle to get Zeke going due to Aaron Donald and the very solid Ram’s front 7 bottles him up throughout the day. That will make it to where Dak has to throw the ball.. A lot which he can. Dak throws for 325 and 3 touchdowns and gets all his weapons involved in the passing game (Cooper, Lamb, and Gallup all get TD). The Rams just don’t have enough on offense anymore and Dallas is going to be too much for them. The game’s over by halftime.
Josh’s Pick: Dallas wins 38-20
Monday, Sept. 14
Pittsburgh at New York Giants, 7:15 p.m.
Big Ben is healthy (for now) and the Steelers are primed to make another run at the playoffs. As for the Giants, they are still in rebuild mode after hiring Joe Judge as their head coach this past offseason. Pittsburgh’s defense is the key for me in this one. Stacked at every level of the defense TJ Watt is going to be all up in Daniel Jones face the whole game (2.5 sacks, Forced Fumble) and Jones will be on his back a lot (Steelers defense will have 5 plus sacks. The Giants did nothing to help fix their offensive line for some reason and it’s going to continue to be a weakness all year. That and lack of weapons for Jones to throw too as the Giants are probably a few years away from even thinking about contending. Pittsburgh rolls in this one.
Josh’s Pick: Pittsburgh 34-16
Tennessee at Denver, 10:10 p.m.
Drew Lock vs Ryan Tannehill! Sexy right? Yeah, I didn’t think so either. But, this is a game between two potential playoff teams. Lock is getting his first real shot to lead Denver as Ryan Tannehill is trying to build off his impressive(but was it really) end to the 2019 season. I trust neither QB in this game so my pick solely is going to the team that I think has the better defense which is Tennessee. With Denver losing Von Miller to an ankle injury it just adds one more obstacle for the Broncos. Clowney will get a pair of sacks and Derrick Henry will rush for 140 yards and 2 touchdowns as Tennessee is just too much for this young Bronco team.
Josh’s Pick: Tennessee 31-20
Enjoy week one!! Don’t forget to catch me on DeBord on Tuesday!
