Devour is a favorite hidden gem of mine. Devour was released to video quietly back in 2005 and that’s when I first had purchased it on DVD. Now I will say that this movie is sort of similar to Stay Alive. Both films feature a killer new video game.
The film stars Jensen Ackles from Supernatural. He plays a college student with a conflicted and dark past. He uses his dreams to figure out what happened to him. He meets a mysterious woman played by Shannyn Sossamon who shares a similar past. Also stars Dominique Swain.
The plot is centered around a new underground game called The Pathway where a college student (Jensen Ackles) and his friends play the game and become addicted to it, not sensing the danger until it is too late.
The game unlocks past traumas and fears with in each of the players where each one ultimately commits a violent act and then tragically ends their own lives.
After looking more into the game, the main characters discover a satanic prophecy that has been quietly placed in effect for years.
I personally enjoyed the twist in this movie that isn’t revealed until towards the end. It explains a lot about the strange events that take place.
I felt satisfied after I first initially had watched this, the plot was interesting and for a smaller budget film, the direction and writing was excellent.
Devour is currently available to rent on Amazon Prime and is definitely one to check out!
