I recently watched, Emelie on Netflix for the first time and it was unnerving and frightening.
The premise is pretty basic. A married couple hires a new babysitter for the night when their regular sitter isn’t available. Obviously they are unaware of this girl’s sinister intentions towards their children. The family needs a babysitter because Anna, who is supposed to be babysitting, is kidnapped by Emelie and a man.
Emelie then poses as Anna and enters the house of the kids she’s supposed to be babysitting 4-year-old Christopher, 9-year-old Sally, and 11-year-old Jacob. The babysitter then subjects the children to some pretty nasty and heartbreaking events throughout the night. She has Jake feed Sally’s hamster to his python and forces Sally to watch. She shows Sally and Christopher a sex tape made by their parents. Jacob goes through Emelie’s things and finds out that she’s not actually Anna. He is horrified to see what Emelie has put on the TV and turns it off, angering Emelie. She makes it known that she wll kill anyone who gets in her way of having a child of her own.
There is sort of a backstory revealed within the film that gives us an insight into who she really is and what she is after, which ends up being a little sad. Her motivation to have a child of her own turns into more of a dangerous obsession. The parents take on a recommendation to hire her and are unaware that she is not who she claims to be.
Actress Sarah Bolger (Mayans M.C. The Lazarus Effect, and Into the Badlands) plays the twisted and psycho babysitter in this movie. At first, she seems like a godsend and a dream come true. But she quickly shifts into a frightening psychopath. Her performance in this film is truly riveting.
Emelie on Netflix is definitely worth checking out and is now available on Netflix
