As my family and I finished watching the 5th and final season of the Netflix original Fuller House this question dawned on me…Why so soon? Possible Spoilers coming…
For those who live under a rock, Fuller House was a spinoff of the original ABC 90s sitcom TGIF show Full House about two bachelors that move in with their best friend too help him raise his three daughters after his wife passes away. The Original series starred Bob Saget as the father Danny Tanner with Dave Coulier as Joey and John Stamos who played the ever-popular brother in law of Danny, Uncle Jessie a motorcycle-riding musician that loved the bachelor life. The three daughters were DJ Tanner played by Candace Cameron Bure, Stephanie Tanner played by Jodie Sweedon, and little baby at the time Michelle Tanner played by twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. As the show went on for 8 seasons we were introduced to Aunt Becky who married Uncle Jessie played by Lori Loughlin and DJs best friend Kimmy Gibbler who became the guest who never leaves played by Andrea Laura Barber. DJ also gets a boyfriend named Steve played by Scott Winger that stays around until the final episode. This cast had amazing chemistry and was the top-billed show on Friday nights for years.
Now fast forward ahead to present time and the hottest streaming service in the world is looking for Original content and come up with this great idea that shows from the 90s are having amazing success rebooting. Who you gonna call? Nope not the Ghostbusters but close they call on a show that knows how to draw great ratings, then Fuller House was born.
Now almost two decades later oldest daughter DJ has a predicament of her own as her husband who was a fireman dies in the line of duty leaving her to raise three boys of her own. Since Danny, Joey, and Uncle Jessie and Aunt Becky have to move away from her sister Stephanie and best friend Kimmy who moves in with her daughter Romona to help her raise her boys Jackson played by Michael Campion, Max played by Elias Harger, and little Tommy played by twins Dashiell and Fox Missitt Soni Bringas. Series regulars include all the originals minus Michelle who did not want to return. Kimmy has an ex named Fernando played by Juan Pablo Di Pace and her brother we never knew about Jimmy Gibler Adam Hagenbuch and DJs business partner in her pet clinic Matt Harmon played by John Brotherton.
The show was a massive hit in season one due to nostalgia but dropped off in season two. Despite that, the show went on and huge fans of the series watched in decent numbers. The show had major guest stars from the original series and lots of 90s references that make us Full House fans pine for more. The show appeals to the new generation as well with new hip terms and of course the ever popular being embarrassed by the parents.
Season 5 was the best season as this was the final so they had to go out with a bang….what is the best way to do that? With a sitcom Triple wedding *gasp*. This season had everything from lots of memories from the original series to a cameo from one of the most popular New Kids On The Block members omg is that…..Joey!
This season left so much open and makes you wonder why can’t we see one or two more seasons? Romona and Jackson are starting their senior year of high school! Why not finish as the original did when DJ graduated high school the storylines of Jackson and Ramona would be amazing especially since they both have significant others.
I am very disappointed because it is ending so soon. I feel robbed and sad because this show has broken my heart twice once as a child and now once at almost 40!
Season 5 in my eyes gets a solid A in my book and I would be super excited if they announced a season 6! Don’t let us down Netflix bring it back for one more go!
