Gareth Southgate’s England has announced their 24 man squad for the UEFA Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark.
The 23 man squad consists of the following players:
Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope.
Defenders: Harry Maguire, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Michael Keane, Tyrone Mings, Kyle Walker, Joe Gomez and Keiran Trippier.
Midfielders: Eric Dier, Mason Mount, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, Phil Foden, Harry Winks and James Ward Prowse.
Forwards: Tammy Abraham, Harry Kane, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Danny Igns and Raheem Sterling.
With the debuts of Danny Igns, Dean Henderson, Mason Greenwood, Phil Foden, and Kalvin Phillips, Southgate has mixed youth and experience to test ahead of this years delayed Euro competition.
Phillips becomes the first Leeds United player to make the England side since Rio Ferdinand, Paul Robinson, and Alan Smith in 2004. With Leeds United returning to the Premier League after a 16 year hiatus from the division this only makes the wait that much sweeter.
Notable exclusions from the side consists of Jamie Vardy and Ben Chilwell from Leicester City and current Premier League winning captain Jordan Henderson. Henderson and Chilwell are both nursing injuries after the end of the season, whereas Jamie Vardy’s exclusion is unknown however, I believe Southgate is looking towards the future of the England squad by replacing him with Mason Greenwood.
Another key talking point is the inclusion of Harry Maguire who is currently facing charges in Greece due to an alleged incident that took place last week. Maguire is expected to be cleared of all charges however the decision is yet to be made and is a bold call from the current England manager.
With no natural left sided defender and the inclusion of 7 attacking options expect to see a lot of change between the two games and how they operate up top. Not a million miles off my Euro 2021 squad prediction, which you can find here. I expect this side to be more or less the same when it comes to the Euro’s with the added inclusion of Ben Chilwell.
