What a year it has been for Welterweight Gilbert Burns. Burns moved from Lightweight to Welterweight after being stagnant in the division. The top of the lightweight division is stacked. So moving to Welterweight gave him a better chance to shine and shine he has. Since April of last year, Burns has a 5-0 record all while taking 2 fights on short notice. He showed his best performance of his career this weekend. In a 5 round domination of number 1 ranked contender Tyron Woodley 50-44.
If you’re not familiar with the scoring system winning 50-44 means that Gilbert Burns won every round. Burns did it with a wide range of punches, kicks, and takedowns. He kept Woodley tentative and scared throughout the duration of the fight. In my opinion, Woodley doesn’t have the same killer instinct and desire that he had while climbing the ranks of the division. Lately, he lets his opponent dictate the fight and tries to catch them with a right hand rather than go on the assault and punish his opponent and then finish him when he’s tired.
It certainly looks like Woodley could be on the downside of his career. He needs to change his gameplan in his fights or it is going to be a long road ahead for him.
As for Burns, in his post-fight interview, he made it known that he wants a shot at his gym partner’s belt. He took down the number 1 contender to the title and should be next in line for a shot.
Looking For A Shot At The Belt
I don’t see him getting a title shot right away seeing as Usman and Masvidal are negotiating a fight against each other but I can see Burns taking a big fight against the guy he called out after knocking out Damien Maia in Colby Covington.
Covington recently left his camp to start his own and is eager to get a second shot at the title. If that were to happen then you would be able to book 2 fights on the same card in July or August with one being a title fight and the other being a next in line fight and the winners would face each other during the holiday season.
After tonight I wouldn’t bet against Gilbert Burns again considering he is part of the new breed of fighters that have no desire to win the easy way. Burns is the type of fighter who will do whatever it takes to beat the piss out of the competition.
In the words of the announcers before each fight …. Are You Ready !!!!!!!
