It seems like every movie studios’ goal is to make a franchise out of their intellectual property. But usually, when it comes to franchises that go more than 2 movies there’s usually a stinker thrown in there. At least one movie that’s seen as the black sheep. Well, I’m happy to say not in this case. Today, I’m looking at one of the funniest movie franchises, The Naked Gun Trilogy.
Now this is a trilogy so you will see a variety of different characters.
All of these movies will star
- Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin
- Priscilla Presley as Jane Spencer
- George Kennedy as Ed Hocken
- O.J. Simpson ad Nordberg
- The first 2 movies were directed by David Zucker and the 3rd movie was directed by Peter Segal.
The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad
The Queen is LA and it’s up to Frank and the rest of his team to foil an attempted hit on the Queen.
The Juice Is Loose
In the first of these Naked Gun movies, O.J. Simpsons’ Nordberg has a small role but grows as the trilogy goes on. And it’s a shame the path that The Juice would take because he’s actually pretty dam funny in his role here.
One Joke After Another
Sometimes when you go back and re-watch movies, especially comedies they don’t hold up. But I think Naked Gun is kind of like the Three Stooges. It’s not necessarily the jokes but the funny and crazy situations these characters get themselves into that makes it a nonstop laugh fest.
Take Me Out To The Ballgame
The climactic conclusion has some extremely funny moments as Frank makes every attempt to protect the Queen. The national anthem and the umpire scenes can have you laughing in tears. Also, look out for an appearance by baseball great Reggie Jackson.
Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell Of Fear
The second movie was advertised as “this is a sequel so big they had to add another half” hence the title The Naked Gun 2 1/2 – The Smell Of Fear. The movie changes locations from LA to Washington DC. The movie introduces us to Quentin Hapsburg played by Robert Goulet and Dr. Meinheimer played by Richard Griffiths.
The movie takes place during the George H.W. Bush presidency. The then-president is going to take the suggestion of Dr. Meinheimer when it comes to relying on solar power as America’s top energy source moving forward. Of course, the guys in the coal and oil industry don’t like this and devise a plot to stop the Dr. from giving his speech.
Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult
The final movie in the franchise introduces us to new characters Rocco played by Fred Ward and Tanya played by Anna Nicole Smith. Frank has retired from the police squad but is recruited back by Ed and Nordberg for one last job.
Lights Camera Action
It’s up to Frank to stop the sinister plot that Rocco has planned for the Academy Awards. The hijinks here rivals that of the first movie’s baseball scene. And let’s just say I don’t think Phil Donahue was ever looked at the same after Franks impersonation of him here.
Why I Recommend The Naked Gun Trilogy
My honest opinion is if you enjoy the 1st movie you will equally enjoy the entire trilogy. The movies are short, you can complete all of them in about 4 and a half hours. But you will get plenty of laughs along the way. While I think the second movie in this franchise is the weakest of the three movies, you will still get plenty of laughs. And don’t fret the three movies will wrap up the entire story arch that will leave you not only satisfied but will leave you with yet one last laugh just before the credits roll.
