American Gymnast Kurt Thomas dies.
We at All Everything Entertainment, are sad to learn that former U.S. gymnast Kurt Thomas has died at the age of 64. The Thomas family announced the news about Kurt’s passing. Back in May Thomas had suffered a stroke.
Thomas a decorated athlete who excelled at what he loved, the sport of gymnastics. Thomas would enjoy winning multiple gold medals throughout his storied career. In international competition from the years of 1975 to 1980. Thomas was the first American male gymnast to win a gold medal at the world championships.
It was his floor exercise at the 1978 world championships in Strasbourg, France. That earned him the first U.S. gymnast to win the gold at the competition level. Also Kurt won many more gold medals for the horizontal bar and all-around.
Thomas was from Miami, Florida who competed in gymnastics at Indiana State. There he won five NCAA championships. Thomas was an All-American who would compete in the 1976 summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada. Doing this while he was still in college at Indiana State. Unfortunately, Thomas did not medal though.
A Universe Lost
Kurt’s wife Beckie Thomas said in a statement. “ Yesterday, I lost my universe, my best friend, and my soulmate of 24 years.” Beckie went on to tell International Gymnast Magazine via The Associated Press. “ Kurt lived his life to the extreme, and I will be forever honored to be his wife.”
Kurt Thomas told the Chicago Tribune this back in 1990. Regarding him missing the 1980 Olympics as Thomas was attempting to make a comeback. “ I don’t think I need to redeem myself personally and financially, but this would be an added dimension to my life. “ You’re not really the best until you achieve it in the Olympics.”
