Marlon Brando was arguably one of the greatest actors to have ever graced the big screen in Hollywood. Now it’s hard for me to be partial as he’s my favorite actor of all time but Brando could do it all!
It did not matter the film or the role the actor took on. Brando set the standard for a new generation of what has been referred to as Method-Actors. Marlon was the epitome of cool. From the clothes he wore to the way he talked, he was just incredible. Nobody had that voice, that emotion, and sincerity when reciting lines in big movie pictures.
The question of what is Brando’s best film is a tough one. The answer I always come up with has three films. On The Waterfront is my personal favorite but The Godfather and Apocalypse Now are also classics.
On The Waterfront was directed by Elia Kazan in 1954. Brando’s lead character Terry Malloy was so legendary. The scene where Malloy is sitting in the backseat of the cab with his brother Charley Malloy portrayed by actor Rod Steiger brought us the legendary line from Terry when he said: “I Coulda Been a Contender.” That line resonates with so many and is just a classic line that has stood the test of time.
The 1972 Film The Godfather is directed by Francis Ford Coppola and is an Italian-American cult classic. The Godfather is based on the story by Mario Puzo. Brando made cinematic history with this film. He played Don Vito Corleone, who was the head of the Corleone Crime Family in New York. This movie and Brando gave us so many memorable scenes. The scene and line from this movie that stands out to me is “I’m Gonna Make Him An Offer He Can’t Refuse.” Such a classic line that is still mimicked to this day.
Then in 1979, we saw a reunion between director Francis Ford Coppola and Marlon Brando for the film Apocalypse Now. This was an epic story about the Vietnam war. Brando portrayed the insane Colonel Walter E. Kurtz. This role just showed how versatile Brando could be as an actor.
There are so many more of Brando’s movies that you could add to the list but those are the three that standout to me.
Marlon Brando has won many awards in his life. He first won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for On The Waterfront. He would later win it again for The Godfather.
Everyone in Hollywood and Nationwide was in awe of his talents. Those same talents would continue to influence and inspire many more films and stars to come. Brando became the standard-bearer for acting in Hollywood. He became someone you wanted to replicate and be around to learn from. He could do no wrong on the camera and we are lucky to be blessed with his work. Marlon Brando will always stand the test of time and will go down as one of the greatest actors of all time and to me…the greatest actor ever.
His legacy will never fade. Thankfully Hollywood gave Brando an offer he couldn’t refuse!
