According to team officials on San Diego, Mike Clevinger is unlikely to pitch in the wild-card series and could miss the remainder of the postseason with an arm injury that did not correct itself during a bullpen session Tuesday. The Padres acquired Clevinger around the trade deadline to be their team ace for the playoffs considering their weakness at pitching and he was starting to show signs of that role before exiting their September 23rd game after 1 inning with arm issues. They are already without Dinelson Lamet so Chris Paddack will get the start game 1.
After this year, the concerns about Clevinger’s arm are going to become more tense. He has two years before he reaches free agency, and the Padres spent significant prospect capital at the deadline in hopes of him anchoring the rotation over the next few years as they try to capture the franchise’s first championship. Let’s hope he will be able to pitch this postseason and his arm will be a non issue in the future.
