The 2020 MLB regular season has come and past and what a 60 game schedule it had with all the Covid cases postponing games in the beginning of the season and every team using the DH position for the year as a test run. The field is set for the playoffs and here is the matchups and seedings for this October.
8 Milwaukee Brewers vs 1 Los Angeles Dodgers
The Brewers limped into the playoffs at the expense of other teams losing while the Dodgers were the best team this season. The Dodgers can hit and their pitching is decent while the Brewers have Christian Yelich and a bunch of under achievers. I have the Dodgers quickly taking care of the Brewers.
7 Cincinnati Reds vs 2 Atlanta Braves
This is a battle of two teams that were hot at the right time. The Reds are 7-3 in their last 10 games while the Braves were 6-4. The Braves are the favorites but I think the Reds will pull the upset in this series. Their bullpen is built great for the playoffs and their starting pitching has been a bright spot while the Braves are relying on their offense to win games. This will go 3 and I have Cincy.
6 Miami Marlins Vs 3 Chicago Cubs
This was a hard matchup to breakdown with how Chicago has been playing. Miami comes in with a young group of pitchers and underrated veteran hitters, while Chicago brings their usual suspects to the dance that they have had the past few post seasons. The difference maker for this matchup will be the play off Yu Darvish. If he pitches a great game in game 1 or 2 they should advance but if he blows his game I could see the Marlins having a chance at stealing this series with the bats of Starling Marte and Brian Anderson. I have the Cubs in 3 as I just think their playoff experience will benefit them considering most of the Marlins haven’t been to the playoffs.
5 St Louis Cardinals vs 4 San Diego Padres
I will get down to the facts in this matchup. San Diego might be the 4 seed but they are the second best team in the NL. Their hitting was on another level with Tatis, Machado, and Myers. They traded for Clevinger mid season which gives them the ace that you need to lean on in these kind of games. The Cardinals will put up a fight with their bats but San Diego will put up too many runs and get the sweep.
8 Toronto Blue Jays vs 1 Tampa Bay Rays
Tampa Bay comes in with the best pitching staff in the league while Toronto played well down the stretch and jumped into the playoffs winning their last series. Ryu will likely start game 1 and Tampa is the best team in the league against Southpaws. I see Tampa Bay being too much for the Blue Jays power bats and this series will be a 2 game sweep.
7 Chicago White Sox vs 2 Oakland Athletics
Both these teams are looking to end playoff droughts. The Oakland A’s come in winning the West Division while the White Sox had a chance to win the Central but finished second. The Athletics have pitched well but have only batted .224 on the year while the White Sox batted .264. The White Sox on the other hand have the potential MVP in Jose Abreu along with other bats and have a really under rated pitching staff which Is headlined by Dallas Keuchel and Lucas Giolito. This matchup will come down to bullpens and who can hit off the other teams which I think the edge goes to the Chicago White Sox. I have the Sox winning in 3.
6 Houston Astros vs 3 Minnesota Twins
The Houston Astros make it into the playoffs despite the injuries at pitching and several star hitters missing significant time. When it gets to this time of year it seems like this group of players always show up ready to go and you can never count them out. The problem is the Minnesota Twins have the best hitting team in the league not named the Dodgers with the aging Nelson Cruz at the epicenter of the Twins lineup. They can hit for power, and get you with speed while also playing good defense. Their pitching was decent but with these bats hitting consistently they don’t need to be top notch. I have the Twins pulling this out in 3 just for fact that the Astros will struggle not having Verlander here.
5 New York Yankees vs 4 Cleveland Indians
The Yankees are coming in finally getting some of their team back from injury. What once was a strength on the team with the bullpen has turned into a little bit of a weakness with their work rate being so high this season. The Indians hitting has been adequate while their pitching has been great with Shane Bieber leading the charge. Bieber leads most of the AL in pitching stats and he most likely will start game 1. If he can pick up the win they win the series but if he loses this series will be a toss up since the Yankees bats have the potential on paper to be better then the Dodgers. I have Bieber winning his game and the Indians pulling the series out in 3 ending my predictions for the first round. Predictions for the second round will come out after the completion of this round.
