The NBA trade deadline is fast approaching and last night we got our first blockbuster trade. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski the Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Timberwolves agreed on a multiplayer and multi pick four-team trade.
The centerpieces of the trade include Clint Capela, Robert Covington, and draft picks.
Capela is going to the Hawks to play alongside Trae Young. This move is huge for the Hawks as Young is going to get the best out of Capela’s game and they got to hold on to John Collins, for now. The Hawks currently are on pace to win the NBA lottery but Young and Capela are a formidable duo to build around. The Hawks travel to Minnesota to take on the Timberwolves this evening. According to the latest NBA odds, the Hawks are 4.5 point underdogs tonight. I expect the Hawks to win straight up as the Timberwolves are a sinking ship dropping 12 games in a row.
The Timberwolves accomplished what they needed in the deal. They acquired an extra first-round pick. One that they hope will land them D’Angelo Russel from the Warriors. Rumors have been swirling that DLo will end up playing alongside Karl Anthony Towns since the summer. This trade will help them get there.
Covington went to the Rockets. The Rockets have been in full pursuit of Covington for the last month. They have coveted a 3 and D guy and Covington fits that bill. Covington is a solid role player but I don’t know that he is going to be the difference in getting to the Championship for the Rockets. The Rockets will now be running a small-ball lineup that features 35-year-old PJ Tucker at center.
The Nuggets may have been the quietest of the four teams in the deal but don’t think that they didn’t continue to acquire assets and build depth to their rotation. Denver will receive a future first-round pick for the Rockets and has brought in Shabazz Napier and Noah Vonleh to fill the void on their bench by Malik Beasley and Juan Hernangomez. The Nuggets currently are sitting third in the Western Conference behind the Lakers and Clippers.
Overall this was one of those trades that will benefit all four teams and we don’t see that often.
