NXT Takeover: Portland Live Results and Review
The Preshow kicks off at 5:30 CST with Charley Caruso, the oft hated Sam Roberts, and Mansoor. Mansoor is OVER with this Portland crowd.
This is about all I am going to say about the preshow because I like most of you, don’t care.
The show kicks off with Poppy singing. This is horrible. She is absolutely horrible but Portland seems pleased with her. Not my type of music I guess. Big match to start the show! Battle of the monsters for the NXT North American Title!
Keith Lee vs Dominik Dijakovic- NXT North American Championship
Bask in his Glory. Keith Lee is out first with more swagger than ever. This dude is so damn cool. Everything about him screams winner. Portland loves Keith Lee. Dijakovic is out next. He is an absolute monster. Double D is rocking a tribute sweatshirt to Kobe Bryant. It features a picture of Kobe on one side and his daughter Gianna on the other. Portland is ready to go as the bell rings Bask in his Glory chants roar.
These guys know each other so well. They have battled all over the World. Fast pace to start the show. Back and forth showing their speed and agility. Keith Lee hits Double D with a Hurricanrana! Are you fricken kidding me?? Lee and Double D take turns running off the ropes ramming into each other. Very funny moment. Double D goes for a huge chop but Lee blocks it into what I would call an elevated in the air armlock. Double D gets out of it after a big chop and a big boot.
Lee rolls to the outside. Double D goes for the over the top spinning moonsault on to Lee and Lee CATCHES HIM in a powerbomb position. Double D fights out of it again and hits Lee with a suplex from the floor onto the apron.
The two behemoths beat the hell out of each other before and after a test of strength. Lee hits a series of strikes before an inverted backbreaker and a german suplex throw. Lee hits a couple of splashes in the corner to Double D. Double D turns the last one into a huge boot to the face of Keith Lee. Double D then goes up to the top and hits a corkscrew moonsault are you KIDDING ME?!?!
More striking. Punches and kicks from both men. Some heavy shots. Both men are feeding off the crowd and screaming at each other. THIS IS AWESOME!
Double D gets the advantage sending Lee to the outside. Both men climb to the top rope. Lee wants a suplex, instead, Double D picks up Lee on his shoulders and hits him with the feast your eyes from the TOP ROPE!!!. THIS IS AWESOME! 1-2 NO! Lee kicks out at 2. Double D goes to pick Lee up and Lee hits the pounce out of nowhere! Both men roll to the outside. Huge strikes by Lee. The crowd wants tables. I want tables. Lee shhhhhs the crowd and hits Double D with a double slap to the chest. AND AGAIN!

The two men embrace after the match! What a match! Lee helps Double D up to the ropes for the crowd to give him his due.
Keith Lee wins and retains the North American title.
Tegan Nox vs Dakota Kai-Street Fight
This is a match I have been waiting for! These two women have done a hell of a job building this feud. Dakota Kai’s heel turn was and is so good. I hope Kai wins this match she needs it more but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tegan win and get a match against NXT UK Women’s Champ Kay Lee Ray.
Tegan Nox is out next. I hope this match is physical. Right on cue Dakota Kai runs out and attacks Tegan from behind. Nox spears Kai through the barricade. Kai hits Nox with a DDT on the floor and rolls her in the ring. The bell rings. Kai looks like me in a WWE 2K game as she rolls to the outside and grabs as many weapons as she can. She grabs what looks like a cricket bat and goes to hammer Tegan’s head off. She misses and Nox gets the advantage and a garbage can.
She puts the garbage can on Kai’s head and hits a reverse sentan through the can on the stairs. She rolls Kai in for the two count. Nox to the outside to grab a table. She sets the table up outside and looks to suplex Kai through it.
Kai gets the advantage after she blocks the suplex attempt and cracks Nox in the head with a garbage can lid. Kai goes for a big boot and misses. Nox grabs a garbage can and beats Kai with it before hitting a belly to back suplex through it. These two are beating the hell out of each other. Kai gets the advantage again with great strikes. Such innovative offense in this match. It continues as Nox and Kai fight their way around the ring, up the apron, and up to the top rope. Kai falls off and hits hard before Nox hits her with the Molly go round. Nox tries to kick Kai’s head off through a chair but misses. Kai instantly takes the chair and throws it to Tegan and kicks it through her face.
Kai grabs duct tape and tapes Nox. Kai throws a huge kick at Nox but misses, so she does it again and kicks her head off.
Nox grabs a steel chain and whacks Kai in the knee with it. Nox wraps a chair around Kai’s leg and stomps it then nails Kai with a huge Shining Wizard that could have ended it but she says she isn’t done yet and goes outside the ring to grab a table.
Nox sets Kai on the table and wraps a chair around her neck. She climbs to the top rope but is attacked from behind by Raquel Gonzalez? Gonzalez is there to help Kai. She attempts to throw Nox through the table but fails. Still, a huge move that looked vicious. Kai pins Nox for the 1-2-3. Kai looks confused when Gonzalez raises her hand after the match but she will gladly take the win.
Dakota Kai defeats Tegan Nox.
Johnny Gargano vs Finn Balor
Gargano is out first with arguably the worst them music in wrestling. Balor is out next with arguably the best theme music in wrestling. These guys look like they have legit heat with each other. This is awesome. They are staring holes in each other. The bell rings lets go!
Balor and Gargano test each other out as they grapple on the mat and exchange moves and submissions. Balor gets Gargano in a headlock with his legs and starts doing pushups. Very funny. Gargano with a nice sidekick to Finn’s face. This crowd is HOT for this match. Back and forth strikes and reversals. Gargano hits a spear off the apron onto Balor. Gargano was looking to steal a play out of Balor’s playbook and hit the dropkick through the barricade but Balor reverses it into a sling blade on the floor. Balor follows up with a nasty knee and roles Gargano in the ring for some ground and pound. The crowd is hot again go back and forth between Gargano and Balor.
Balor with a nasty dragon screw leg whip on the ropes to Gargano. Balor putting a good beating on Gargano. Neither of these guys has an ounce of body fat on them. Back to the ground game for Balor on Gargano. After a few minutes of submission attempts and holds, Gargano gets back into the match. He hits Balor with a step-up enziguri. Gets Balor to the outside and hits a running senton. Gargano is feeding off the crowd. Slingshot spear for 2 from Gargano. More back and forth. Another step up enziguri followed by a Pele Kick from Balor.
More back and forth high energy and impact moves. One after another. This match is awesome. Gargano hits Balor with the running dropkick on the outside. He goes to the announce table to put Balor through it. Balor reverses it and puts Gargano on the table. He hits the running dropkick off one table onto another!! What a move!!! Balor rolls Gargano into the ring. He hits the Coupe De Gras’ and follows it up with 1916. That’s all she wrote.
This is the best Finn Balor has ever been in WWE. He has found his niche and has embraced the black-hearted Prince.
Finn Balor defeats Johnny Gargano.
Rhea Ripley vs Bianca Belair- NXT Women’s Championship
Bianca Belair is out first. Rhea follows. Both women look like confident badasses. This match starts off hot. Belair is showing her athleticism while Ripley shows her brute strength. Huge chops by Ripley. The crowd is divided between Rhea and Bianca. I never understood why Belair’s opponents never use her hair against her. Anyway. Belair with a nice standing moonsault on Ripley. Belair is strong as a bull too. She really has it all.
Back and forth exchanges between the two women. Rhea with a face-first electric chair for a 2 count. Then quickly turns Belair into a cloverleaf and slaps her on her rear side. HUGE spinebuster by Bianca for a two. Bianca sets Ripley up on the top rope and in the process, they slap the hell out of each other. Bianca whips Ripley so hard with her hair they could hear it in New York. Belair then lifts Ripley over her head for a powerslam. Cartwheel moonsault by Belair but Rhea blocks it. Rhea goes for the riptide but Bianca reverses. Bianca goes for the torture rack but Rhea gets out of it but runs into a HUGE spear by Bianca.
This is a great match these women are hitting each other hard. Bianca goes for the double chicken wing slam but a reversal by Rhea. Bianca with a HUGE backbody drop to Ripley over the top rope and follows it up with Air Belair over the top rope. Belair is en fuego.
After some fighting on the outside, they both work their way to the top rope. Huge headbutt by Ripley. Ripley tries a sunset bomb but Belair blocks it. Ripley then spins Belair off the top rope into a Riptide for the 1-2-3. What a showing by Bianca. I am disappointed Bianca didn’t win but this match was awesome.
After the match, the QUEEN is here!! Charlotte attacks Rhea Ripley from behind and grabs a mic. After she declares that she will challenge Ripley at Mania she lays out Ripley. On her way out of the ring she throws Belair into the steps and walks out.
Rhea Ripley defeats Bianca Belair to retain her NXT Women’s Title–Charlotte Flair will challenge Ripley at Wrestlemania 36.
Undisputed Era vs BroserWeights (Matt Riddle and Pete Dunne) NXT Tag Championships
UE is out first. They look great. Kyle O’Reily is fantastic on the title guitar. Dunne and Riddle are out next. Riddle has a mic and repeatedly asks the question, “How much fish could Bobby Fish fry if Bobby Fish could fry fish.” This makes UE run down the ramp and the fight is on.
Bell rings lets go!
Classic tag team wrestling back and forth with all four men getting their moves in. KOR is so damn smooth in the ring. Dunne is so technical. I’d love to see Dunne and KOR go for 25-30 minutes. Dunne is so great at dissecting his opponents apart.
UE gets the early upper hand and keeps Dunne trapped in their corner. Corkscrew leg whip on to Dunne and then Fish destroys the same leg from the outside. UE is so good. The crowd wants Riddle as KOR and Fish keep Dunne on the mat.
Dunne finally gets the hot tag to Riddle. Riddle hits all sorts of offense on UE. Exploder suplexes on both Fish and KOR. Brotons on both. Bro-to Sleep into a German suplex on KOR for a 2. This place is HOT for Riddle. Dunne gets the tag back in and we get tandem offense on KOR from the Broserweights. Riddle is back in. Dunne and Riddle both climb to the top at the same time in the same corner. They both moonsault off onto each member of UE. KOR got the knees up and hits back to back suplexes on Riddle. Riddle isn’t phased and hits KOR with back to back HUGE knees.
Riddle with a huge spear on Fish on the outside. Riddle goes for the Bro-Hammer on KOR but Fish chops the leg out before he can. Double team move by UE for a 2. Dunne is just getting back up to the corner and now he gets the hot tag.
Dunne with innovative offense on KOR. Step-up enziguri into an arm bar. KOR rolls through into an ankle lock. Dunne reverses into his own ankle lock! Fish is in to break it up but Riddle puts him in an ankle lock. KOR with a reversal into the Scorpion Deathlock on Dunne. Fish reverses the ankle lock he was in into a move of his own until Riddle hits a double knee to UE. All four men are down. Pandamonium.
After their back to their feet the Broserweights attempt a Doomsday Device that is reversed. Dunne is thrown to the outside. Double team offense to Riddle and a leg lock by KOR> Dunne is in to break it up by stomping on KOR’s wrist. This match is awesome!!
Dunne and KOR are the legal men as the match resets.
Dunne and Riddle have miscommunication with each other twice. First Dunne runs into Riddle then Riddle spears Dunne. UE with tandem offense on Dunne for 2. Riddle tags himself in. Final Flash to Fish. Stereo kicks to KOR. Tandem offense and Dunne and Riddle hit their finisher on KOR for the 1-2-3. This crowd is HOT!!!!!
BRO BRO BRO BRO BRO BRO BRO!!!! Dunne and Riddle are awesome together!!
AND NEW!!! Matt Riddle and Pete Dunne defeat Undisputed Era to win the NXT Tag Team Titles.
Adam Cole vs Tomasso Ciampa- NXT Championship
WOW!!! What a match!! This match had it all and is already a match of the year candidate. Ciampa and Cole beat the holy hell out of each other. They hit each other with every move in each other’s arsenal over and over again.
Both men went through tables. Both men nearly won the title. The rest of the Undisputed Era would come out to help Cole retain but Ciampa fought through it all.
Cole would hit 3 superkicks and an exposed knee for a 2. Ref bump. Ciampa could have pinned Cole for a 20 count. Johnny Gargano is out and he turns on Ciampa. He hits Ciampa in the head with Goldie.
Why did he do that?!?!?!
Adam Cole would pin Ciampa for the 1-2-3.
What a match. What a show. This may be an instant reaction but this may have been the best Takeover ever. Where do we go from here? Will Ciampa get another shot at Goldie? Why did Gargano turn on Ciampa?
Keep it here with AEE for all the answers to those questions.
