Huge news out of the NFL today on the Eve of the season. The Saints and star running back Alvin Kamara have agreed to a 5 year contract extension that puts him just under Christian McCafrey as the highest paid back in the league.
According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Saints and Kamara reached an agreement on a five-year contract extension worth $75 million dollars. Kamara will get $77.13 million overall (including the money due this season), $34.3 million in guaranteed money, and a $15 million signing bonus. The team later confirmed the extension.
The $15 million-per-year average puts Kamara just under Christian McCaffrey’s $16 million per year and right with Ezekiel Elliott’s $15 million-per-year extensions.
This has been about a long time in the making as Kamara walked out of training camp earlier this month and many thought that was linked to contract negotiations. However, that is all out the window now and the Saints have taken care of their man.
In my opinion, this is a big signing for the Saints as Drew Brees continues to age they will need to rely on Kamara even more and in a season that is Super Bowl or bust this is one less potential issue they have to deal with.
Kamara in his career with the Saints has amassed 4,000 total yards and has put the ball in the end zone 37 times. Expect the Saints to lean heavily on Kamara once again in 2020.
