Sony and Ghostbusters do it again!!! No not the new movie Ghostbusters: Afterlife produced by Jason Reitman that hits theaters on March 5th, 2021 but the one released in 1984 by his father Ivan!
The original Ghostbusters was re-released for Independence Day weekend and was number one at the box office! Last year Sony took the number one honor with Spiderman: Far From Home. This year it was Ghostbusters that took that spot as they pulled in $550,000 over the three day weekend and over $656,000 since it hit theaters on July 1st, 2020!
These were huge numbers considering that most big chains are either not open fully (AMC, Regal, and Cinemark) while some are not open at all. The movie was shown on 622 screens nationwide on a weekend where 90% of box office money comes from drive-in movie theaters.
Since it’s first release in 1984, 36 years ago the lifetime gross of the Ghostbusters franchise has made over $243.2 million. Through three movies, including the 2016 femme reboot with Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, the Ghostbusters franchise has made $687.7 million.
Sony also had the second highest-grossing movie this weekend when The Rock and Kevin Hart hit movie Jumanji: The Next Level drew an estimated $300,000 on the 4th Of July weekend.
Last year Sony had a huge holiday six-day stretch when Spiderman: Far From Home brought in $185M. With the movie finishing at $1.1B Worldwide.
