The dust has settled and we now have new WWE rosters. We saw big names move shows, tag teams broken up, feuds moving shows, and the return of a Freak. The WWE draft certainly had it’s good and bad but did the good outweigh the bad? Let’s get into it.
The Fiend and Alexa Bliss to Raw
If there was one move that was a must it was this one. The Fiend and Roman Reigns are the two biggest stars in the WWE and they needed to be separated…for now. The Fiend moving to Raw with Alexa Bliss sets up so many potential storylines down the road. Feuds with the likes of Jeff Hardy, Drew McIntyre, Edge, and Randy Orton could be gold. Plus, it gives him flexibility. If WWE wants to push him into the WWE Title picture then he could win the Royal Rumble and challenge Randy Orton at Wrestlemania. Will that happen? Maybe not. Orton and Edge is likely to take place at the show of shows but I’d much rather see Fiend and Orton for the gold, letting Fiend get his revenge on Orton for taking his title at Wrestlemania 33. Let’s not forget about Alexa Bliss coming over. Bliss and Fiend made an immediate impact taking out Zelina Vega and Andrade. Bliss and Fiend could be the new power couple in WWE and how cool would it be if Bliss wins the Royal Rumble and Fiend wins the Rumble and they are both crowned champions at Wrestlemania.
Seth Rollins to Smackdown
This move was a must. Seth has done everything there is to do on Raw and he needed to get away from the Mysterios (more on that later). Rollins moving to Smackdown gives him a chance for fresh feuds and to slightly recreate his character again. If it were up to me I’d put Rollins and Daniel Bryan in a feud right away and after watching Smackdown we might be headed in that direction.
Bianca Belair to Smackdown
The booking of Bianca Belair has been awful since she was called up to the main roster. Bianca is a 5 tool player in the ring and should be doing far more than running track in vignettes. Moving to Smackdown gives her a chance to show off her talents and take on new competition. I look forward to seeing Bianca mix it up with Sasha Banks or Bayley. If I’m booking Wrestlemania, I have Bianca challenge Sasha Banks for the Smackdown Women’s Championship.
AJ Styles to Raw
With Seth Rollins moving to Smackdown there was a major void at the top of the Raw card. Hello AJ Styles. Styles coming back to the red brand makes sense at this point. He wasn’t going to sniff the title picture on Smackdown for the foreseeable future, so a move to Raw was a must. Styles now can have fresh fun feuds with the likes of Drew McIntyre and Edge. Plus, who doesn’t want to see a potential title program between AJ and Randy Orton down the road, or AJ taking on The Fiend at Summerslam of next year. The sky is the limit for the face that runs the place on Raw.
Kevin Owens to Smackdown
Again, this was a must. Kevin Owens has done NOTHING on Raw since his lackluster feud with Seth Rollins. Now, Owens finds himself back on Smackdown with his best friend Sami Zayn. Whether Owens feuds with Zayn for the Intercontinental title or if they decide to team up again it’s going to be gold. Potential feuds with KO taking on Big E or even taking the Money in the Bank Briefcase from Otis could be great. However, I want KO and Zayn for the IC title and I want that at Wrestlemania. These guys both deserve a high caliber big money match with each other at the biggest show of the year. Give me Owens vs Zayn! Give it to us!
- Lars Sullivan returning was a pleasant surprise. He looked great in his return.
- Sheamus moving to Raw. This gives us a potential Sheamus and McIntyre feud down the line and who doesn’t want to see that?
- Raw is now Walking With Elias and that is going to be big for Elias. Elias can feud with guys like Jeff Hardy, Matt Riddle, and Ricochet.
- Naomi moving to Raw will be a fresh start for her. A heel turn could do a lot for her on Raw.
Splitting up New Day
While I love that Big E is getting his much overdue singles push, at the same time, I don’t understand why he has to do it on a different show than his boys. There is no reason that all three of these guys can’t stay on the same show and have different storylines going on. Big E instantly should be a mid-card champion with all intentions of having a World Championship match or program in the future. However, splitting up the New Day and putting them on separate rosters just isn’t the way to go. Not only are these guys real-life best friends but having allies on the same roster is never a bad thing. They should have gone the same route that they went when Kofi was in the title picture and Big E and Woods were tag champs. Let Big E have his singles run, while Woods and Kofi own the depleted tag division. I digress. Rumors have it that Big E is going to get rid of the pancake throwing persona and go serious and that is great. But again, why couldn’t he do that on the same show as Kofi and Woods? Now Kofi and Woods are the Raw Tag Team Champions and Big E is left to fend for himself on the blue brand. As of right now, Big E is a favorite to win the Royal Rumble but I don’t see him winning. Both titles are already occupied at Wrestlemania with Reigns and the Rock on Smackdown and a combination of McIntyre, Fiend, Orton, and Edge on Raw. I just don’t think that Big E is quite there yet. Give the big man some time to groove on his own and a title program should come in the future. I’d expect to see a Reigns and Big E feud come May of 2021.
Moving the whole Rollins/Murphy/Mysterio Feud to Smackdown
This is hands-down the stupidest thing they did during this draft. I was so happy when Seth Rollins was drafted to Smackdown but what happens next is just appalling. Why in the world would they move the whole Rollins/Murphy/Mysterio family storyline over to the blue brand? These guys have been feuding since May. Six months of this feud. Enough is enough. On Smackdown we saw the Mysterio’s come out to attack Rollins. They were then joined by Murphy who took Seth out and offered his hand to the Mysterios. Now as I mentioned earlier I think that Rollins and Daniel Bryan teased a feud so hopefully what we saw on Friday night between Rollins and the Mysterios was the last of it, however, I highly doubt it. I’d expect Rollins and Murphy to have a match and Murphy to eventually be teaming with Dominik. But really, who cares? All of these guys involved in this angle are great, but this story is just done. It’s been done. Let’s move on to better things for all involved.
This is a shame. A downright shame. The former NXT champion hasn’t done a damn thing on the main roster since being called up from NXT. Black has been on the main roster for over two years now and hasn’t done a f*cking thing. It is just horrifying to me how they can have a talent like Black and do absolutely nothing with the guy. Now you have him drafted over to Smackdown, which is a move that I think is great for his career but why in the hell did it take six rounds on day two of the draft for him to be drafted and why was Titus O’Neil drafted before him? Again, this is a f*cking shame, a downright shame. If they don’t know what to do with a guy like Black then send him back to NXT and let Triple H do his thing with him. However, on Smackdown Black has a chance to reinvent himself again. Here’s to hoping they realize what they have in him. I’d love to see Black and Daniel Bryan throw down at some point in the near future.
See above. But, unlike Black, Andrade took a clean loss to Garza and then was dispatched of by the Fiend on Raw. Rumors have it that he’s injured but who knows. This is another case of a great talent getting lost on the main roster. If you can’t find something to do with Andrade then please send him back to NXT.
Splitting up Heavy Machinery
Talk about a stupid move. WWE has a knack for splitting up tag teams before they should. And this is another case of that. While Otis is over with the fans splitting him up from Tucker is a deathwish for the career of Tucker. You may say that Otis overshadowed Tucker but what is Tucker going to do now on Raw as a singles competitor? Tucker is a talented big man but he is sure to get lost in the shuffle now. Maybe he can turn heel and be a bodyguard for AJ Styles. I don’t know. Otis on the other hand is Mr. Money in the Bank and Vince is seemingly smitten by him. Why? I don’t know. I’m not big on Otis. However, the question I want to be answered is when will Otis cash in that briefcase? If he is to cash in on Roman Reigns then he will join Damian Sandow, John Cena, and Baron Corbin as the only people to cash in the briefcase and lose. Roman is not losing that title belt anytime soon. I repeat he’s not losing that belt anytime soon. Overall, I am just disappointed that they broke this team of steaks and weights up because they never met their potential. They were never tag team champs in a very poor tag team division. But again, Vince hates tag team wrestling.
Apollo to Smackdown
I don’t hate this move for Apollo as he can go over to Friday night and put on some incredible matches and maybe just maybe I will get the tag team of Chad Gable and Apollo Crews that I have been yearning for for years. However, I think that he should be in the Retribution stable and there has to be some sort of pay off with him and the Hurt Business. The Hurt Business did nothing but bully him for months on end and he just dips over to Smackdown without concern. I just don’t like that. Crews should’ve either conformed and joined the Hurt Business or should’ve been in Retribution feuding with Hurt Business. Unlike the other bad on this list, I don’t hate this move for Apollo as he can go over to Friday night and put on some fantastic matches with that loaded roster. And hey, who knows, maybe we can see Gable and Crews tag team!
So at the end of the day, I’m going to say that WWE did a good job with the draft and that it was a success. They did a good job adding flexibility to both rosters and giving us a chance to see new and fresh matches and feuds. Now it’s up to creative.
