THE OFFSPRING – Americana – Music Video Rankings
8. All I Want.
The band rocks out here in what look like a small apartment. But the editor has spiced it up with the some funky colors and edits. The video follows a young man breaking free from a house. As goes about his business he removes an article of clothing as he makes his way through the streets playing by his own rules. There’s also some old interesting black and white footage of old planes and cars going through stunts, but they don’t go as intended. They pack a lot into a music video that is less then two minutes but it’s feels like a bit of sensory overload at times.
My rating for All I Want is a 5
7. The Meaning Of Life.
I like the premise behind this video as you’ve got what looks like wheelchair racers speeding through the desert what looks like they are trying to do what the song implies and trying to figure out the meaning of life. The lead singer Dexter Holland belts out lyrics by hanging upside down in a tree with some really funky pink lighting. There’s a slew of guys in hazmat suits bouncing around like they are in uncharted territory as well. This video is very fast and frantic. There are some great parts to this video. I loved the editing and how the video was shot. However, This video won’t leave a long-lasting impression. As it missed on a lot of other factors for me.
My rating for Meaning Of Life is a 6
6. Pretty Fly ( For A White Guy )
Probably the song they are most known for from a mass audience is my number six pick, Pretty Fly ( For A White Guy ). Now, most know the backstory for this video. A white guy trying to be someone he is not. He tries to do things he thinks will make him cool in the eyes of his peers. From cruising in his pinto to trying to pick up girls to a bad attempt at break dancing this wanna be ends up getting cooled off from trying to hard to be someone he’s not.
Now while this video is a lot of fun, really funny, and full of energy there are a couple of things holding it back from a higher score. The song is very descriptive when talking about this wannabe and how he went to buy an Ice Cube album and picked up Vanilla Ice instead. I would have liked to see some type of Vanilla Ice Spoof here. Also when they say he went to get a tattoo of a 13 and ended up with a 31 one, I would have like to see this as well. Overall it’s still a very fun a memorable video with just a few little things holding it back from a higher score.
My rating for Pretty Fly For A White Guy is an 8.
5. She’s Got Issues
The video has the band rocking out in what looks like an abandoned wear house but the focus of the video is not on them as it is a girl who has, let’s say a lot of baggage in her life. From just getting out of bed to her commute, being at work, going to the gym to even visiting her psychiatrist they portray a girl who is on the verge of a mental breakdown. But this video does it in a very unique way with the craziness in her life being shown by cartoons, giving it a Who Framed Roger Rabbit vibe. The video could have been simple without these animations but there are so many and they are so well done and help tell the story that it really sets this music video apart and makes it a very good one.
My rating for She’s Got Issues is an 8
4. I Choose
The band ditches the warehouse and this time rocks out in a Garden. The story follows a young man making his way through the airport choosing not to follow maybe the rules that society has for us. And he’s not the only one either as we also see people who might usually be perceived as being serious as a security guard, flight attendants and even nuns choosing to let loose and have fun. The video also has a1960’s vibe to it with the go-go dancers, the colors, and the way it is shot which gives this video a very righteous vibe.
My rating for I Choose is an 8
3. Gone Away
Now while the music videos of The Offspring, for the most part, have been full of wackiness and bright colors, Gone Away takes a turn to the darker side but that’s a good thing. The song itself is darker then the rest and the band uses that to make this gritty video in a warehouse. There’s no story going on here in this video, but they don’t need one. The video is so well shot and edited with this old film effect it makes for a really powerful as it just focuses on the band.
My rating for Gone Away is an 8
2. The Kids Aren’t Alright
I have to give credit to The Offspring, with 8 videos they did a great job of having each one look different. And in the late ’90s with so many music videos constantly hitting the TV you really needed an attention grabber and that’s what The Kids Aren’t Alright is. From a shooting perspective, it’s a simple rotating 360 camera throughout but it’s how the video comes together that makes this video great. The constantly morphing of young people who maybe society thinks aren’t alright is really well done as there is a vast variety of people from all walks of life represented here. The Offspring themselves are also trapped here in this morphing world as they rock out. The video is really unique a portrays the message of fragile lives and shattered dreams just like the song.
My rating for The Kids Aren’t Alright is a 9
1. Why Don’t You Get a Job
When a video starts off with the lead singer hang gliding into his opening verse. You know it’s going to be a fun one. Now The song is called Why Don’t You Get a Job. In the video The Offspring show-off. Both perspectives of a man and woman who are both being taken advantage of in their own ways. For the man, he’s working his but off and it’s not enough cause his girl has expensive taste.
For the woman, she’s in a relationship with a deadbeat boyfriend who refuses to get off his lazy but. But for our guys and gals who are in these dead-end relationships. They find empowerment and they join The Offspring and their constantly growing crowd. As they all take a stand for themselves and proudly march through the city. Now while this song is not the best on their album. I think it’s their best video and that’s what these rankings are all about.
My rating for Why Don’t You Get a Job is a 9.
