The Slim Shady LP was Released 21 Years ago Today
On February 23rd, 1999 Eminem to the masses was born! The Slim Shady LP was released by Dr.Dre and Aftermath Records! This was his second studio album but first on major label and mainstream! The majority of The Slim Shady LP’s lyrical content is written from the perspective of Eminem’s alter ego Slim Shady, whom he created on the Slim Shady EP (1997). The Slim Shady LP contains cartoonish depictions of violence and heavy use of profanity, which Eminem referred to as “made-up tales of trailer-park stuff” and likened it to be horror film-esque and only for entertainment value.
The Slim Shady LP debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It received critical and commercial success as critics praised Eminem for his unique lyrical style. The first official single, “My Name Is”, peaked at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Eminem’s first entry on that chart. In November 2000, The Slim Shady LP was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). At the 42nd Grammy Awards, the album won Best Rap Album and Best Rap Solo Performance (for “My Name Is”).
Met with general acclaim from music critics, The Slim Shady LP turned Eminem from an underground rapper into a high-profile celebrity. Eminem also became a highly controversial figure due to his lyrical content, which some perceived to be misogynistic and a negative influence on American youth.
The Slim Shady LP has been regarded as one of greatest hip hop albums of all time, as well as one of the greatest major-label debuts!
