Liverpool and Bayern Munich have agreed a £20million plus £5million in add-ons deal for Spanish international midfielder Thiago. The Spaniard will join Liverpool on a 4-year contract after 7 years at Bayern. Thiago becomes the second signing of the summer transfer window for Liverpool after signing Greek left back Kostas Tsimikas earlier this month.
Thiago is expected to wear the number 6 jersey for The Reds and the £5 million in add-ons will only come into effect if Liverpool manages to win either the Premier League or Champions League while Thiago is under the contract. The announcement comes a week after Jurgen Klopp was quoted in saying “I cannot end speculation as long as the transfer window is open. It is nice that we are linked with him but that is pretty much it really. It is because he is a good player and Liverpool is a big club, so that is nice.”
Bayern boss Hansi Flick said at a news conference on Thursday: “Thiago is an exceptional player who had huge success here for seven years. He’s a great person and an exceptional professional. It was very emotional today when he said goodbye.” Although Thiago started his career at Barcelona, it was until his move to Bayern where fans got to see his true potential.
Winning 7 consecutive Bundesliga titles alongside 4 German Cups and 1 Club World Cup, Liverpool have signed a very capable and well-established midfielder who will slot into their squad very comfortably. An official announcement is expected on Friday.
