Yesterday we were given great news from UFC President Dana White about Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. There will be multiple shows stretched out over 2 weeks with the big one being a stacked UFC 251 PPV card. This card will feature 3 title fights, a rematch between 2 strong women, and a fight between 2 other women who are looking to get things going. Here are my predictions for the UFC 251 card and the odds for each fighter.
Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal
Wow what a weekend can do to change the complexion of not only a UFC main event but a Card itself . Gilbert Burns has tested positive for Covid and was forced to pull out of the fight and just when we thought the main event would be scrapped Masvidal comes in gets tested on July 4th and the fight fight is back on with Masvidal taking Burns spot . Usman is favored at -260 while Masvidal is the underdog at +200. This fight adds more smack talk and backstory to it since both were publicly bashing each other during a fight in the winter and they don’t like each other . If Jorge a Masvidal trainer at all before this i can see a Summer blockbuster of an main event where you see alittle bit of everything from these guys . This will be anything but boring and I will go out and say Masvidal will put them upset considering all camp Usman has been training to fight Burns who is a completely different style fighter. Bank on Masvidal to bring the mouth too .
Alexander Volkanovski vs Max Holloway 2
In the Co-Main Event of the evening we have the -190 Champion taking on the +165 former champion and underdog. The last time they fought Volkanovski dominated and confused Holloway while taking the title away from him in the process. In the rematch, I don’t see anything changing with Volkanovski being the more aggressive fighter who didn’t seem to get tired last time. Whereas Holloway seemed to take too many shots and didn’t look the same. Getting down to the point you stick with the favorite in these types of fights and I see him winning in 4. I also see Holloway having to make a decision on what is next for him in the weeks after this fight. I don’t think he retires but maybe he moves up or moves down a division to see what he can do there.
Peter Yan vs Jose Aldo
(Vacant Bantamweight Championship)-
It’s hard to believe that Peter Yan has only been in the UFC for 2 years and he is only 27. But in that time he has racked up a 6-0 record with 3 knockouts all the while Jose Aldo has seemed to already hit his peak. Aldo has been alternating wins and losses over his last couple of fights. He most recently lost a decision to top-ranked challenger Marlon Moraes. Coming into this fight Yan is a -225 favorite while Jose Aldo is a +190 underdog. I think Peter Yan has too much momentum and age on his side. You may want to take a chance on a decent line for Aldo but I would stick with Yan here.
Jessica Andrade vs Rose Namajunas 2
Last time these women fought back in May of last year Andrade knocked out Rose with a slam and took the Women’s Strawweight title before losing it to the current champ Zhang. These two both are looking to get that title back and I see this as a number 1 contenders match to see who is next in line. I see Jessica Andrade taking this with a knockout in round 3. I just think she is confident and with a win here she has a chance to get her title back. She badly wants to write her wrong of losing more then Rose does. Plus Rose hasn’t fought since last May so what we can expect from her is unknown. The line isn’t out yet but I expect it to be a close one.
Paige VanZant vs Amanda Ribas
Surprised this fight made it to the main card but to be honest I do not have much to say. Paige is 3-3 in her last 6 fights while Ribas is 3-0 since last May. Paige hasn’t fought since January of 2019 and I just don’t think her heads all the way in this. I just don’t see any chance of Ribas not winning this. If you’re betting on this fight hammer Ribas.
All in all, I am looking forward to seeing how this Fight Island is produced over the two week period. I’m also hoping this Big Card lives up to the hype because you can’t beat watching 3 title fights on just one card.
This is D-Bake and I’m ready for fight week!
