Vikings fans rejoice! Vikings fans and Dalvin Cook have a lot to be happy about as the star running back has signed a 5-year contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings. The deal is worth 63 million in total and Cook will get 28 million guaranteed. This is a huge deal for the Vikings and Cook as nobody wanted the drama of a contract extension to last any longer and with the NFL season kicking off tomorrow this couldn’t have come at a better time.
Cook is coming into 2020 off the heels of his best season as a pro. On top of making the Pro Bowl for the first time, Cook amassed over 1600 total yards and had 13 total touchdowns. To say Cook earned this would be an understatement.
Cook was not only huge in the offensive attack but the pressure he takes off of Kirk Cousins is enormous. Cousins had one of his best seasons last year with the Vikings and a lot of that had to do with the way Cook controlled the game.
This deal will see Cook average 12.6 million per season which puts him sixth amongst running back yearly salary. The Vikings were skeptical of making this deal as all teams are when they are considering locking a running back up to a long term contract. Especially when you take into consideration that Cook has had multiple injuries since being drafted in the second round in 2017.
However, for now, Cook is healthy and he will once again be the Vikings workhorse on offense.
With Cook getting this deal and recently Alvin Kamara and Joe Mixon being locked up by the Saints and Bengals respectively maybe the tides are changing and running backs will start to earn for their production.
The Vikings host the Packers tomorrow afternoon.
Are you ready for some football!?!?
