Toronto Maple Leafs president, Brendan Shanahan calls you up and says, ‘hey, you’re the Leafs GM for the day.’
Don’t mind if I do!
So – deep breath… here it is. I would offer to trade Mitch Marner and William Nylander to the rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks for Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. Ok, so the Leafs might have to also throw in Alex Kerfoot to make this deal possible from a financial perspective. In addition to Toews and Kane, I’d also ask for future considerations – a draft pick pending the Hawks making the playoffs or where they finish off in the standings.
Now listen – before you freak out… there’s a method to my madness.
Remember how I’ve been suggesting #TheTimeIsNow? Well, it’s true. Why wait? What’s the point? When does the “build” stop? When does the focus of winning the cup become a thing? I’d rather make this move RIGHT NOW. It should essentially guarantee a cup to Toronto in the next 3 years; rather than keep planning for the future that always seems to maintain a distance from the present. You know you’ll get 3 solid years out of Toews and Kane as they’ll want to cash-in on their next deals following the 2022-23 season.
So, let’s break this down.
Marner | Nylander + Kerfoot
Sidenote: For all those crying about Marner’s contract, look at the numbers between him and Willy.
Toews | Kane + Future Considerations
Change Your Mind Yet?
Is it a gamble? Yes – but some might agree a gamble worth taking. Toews and Kane are proven consistent producers playing on a crumbling Blackhawks team. They’ve won 3 Stanley Cups together in a 5-year span in Chicago – why sit through a 2-3 year rebuild while at the peak of their prime? Chicago’s rebuild would get a super head start without having to rely heavily on drafting or trading for prospects with proven NHL young stars going back the other way! It’s a win-win for both teams and an almost certain Stanley Cup win for Toronto in the next 3 years! In addition, the Leafs would free themselves of that Marner contract everyone flipped their ish over and would have plenty of cap space when the Toews and Kane contracts were up.
It Was All A Dream
…if only NHL 21 GM mode was a reality!
Ok fine, this will never happen – as Toews and Kane would also need to both waive their No Trade Clauses to even make this possible. But this would certainly be a blockbuster trade that would shake up the NHL world wouldn’t it?
But hey, I wasn’t the only crazy one thinking this way this morning! Check out my buddy Frank (@hockeyilluminati on IG) with his take on this!
