Friday Night Smackdown Review #15 by Anthony S. DiSalvatore
Hello everybody, and welcome to another overly opinionated edition of my WWE Smackdown results and review4/10/20! Now I know wrestling as a whole has been tough to watch recently, but it’s kinda my job to sell you on why you should read this thing, so hear me out.
At Wrestlemania, Bray Wyatt finally got his win back against Cena (if you can call it that). What’s he going to do next? Braun Strowman won his first title! People have said for years he should be champion. The match itself wasn’t great, and it’s a couple of years too late, but the point he’s a world champion finally! Nothing bad can happen this week! That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but you guys should still be HYPED for this show! This is the most excited I’ve been in a few months at least. Let’s see what they have this week!
The show opens with a Strowman promo. He basically recaps his match with Goldberg, which they just showed. He doesn’t get far before Nakamura shows up! He’s without Cesaro or Sami Zayn this week, so this should be hard to watch. Nakamura comes in for a promo and tells a knock-knock joke. I can’t understand most of what he says. He badly needs Sami Zayn to talk for him. Cesaro shows up to get the jump on Strowman and fails HARD. Cesaro and Nakamura flee.
Match #1: Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross vs. Asuka & Kairi Sane
This match again? It’s a rematch from Wrestlemania night one, and I still don’t care about it! But I have been advocating lately for former champions to get immediate rematches, so I’m all for this. Hopefully, Asuka and Kairi win, because I just hate the team of Bliss & Cross. I thought Bliss was supposed to be using Nikki! When did they become friends? I guess I just dreamed that entire first part of their relationship. In any event, I’m just not buying this. Bliss is such a good heel that I think she should never be a babyface, no matter how much she gets cheered. Her team with Nikki Cross reminds me of Miz’s team with Shane McMahon a couple of years ago. That too was ridiculous and stupid.
What’s wrong with Asuka lately? Nothing she does makes any sense. She’s just running around yelling at everybody and keeps doing weird dances. Is this supposed to be a comedy gimmick? I can’t figure it out. Nikki Cross gets the win for her team via swinging neckbreaker. I wish I could have skipped this match, but I was watching it live so I had no such luck. This match went way too long, but as always with these coronavirus PANIC shows, I won’t take away points for them having to stretch for time.
Up next is the rivalry that will not die! Elias is here to sing a song again. It’s dedicated to Corbin or something. I used to love Elias, but he’s getting annoying now. At one point I was convinced he’d be a champion sooner than later, but I fell off the bandwagon around the time he became a babyface for about three weeks and then turned back. Now he’s been trapped in this ridiculous going nowhere rivalry with Corbin, who nobody wants to see anymore. He’s not in Humberto Carrillo territory, but he needs to get some decisive wins over some bigger names for people to start taking him seriously. We can only hope at this point.
Match #2: Tucker vs. Dolph Ziggler (w. Sonya Deville)
Well, they dropped the ball with Braun at the beginning of this show, and Elias is stuck in quicksand right now, so this rivalry may be the one I’m most invested in at this point. The major problem they have in this match is Otis and Mandy are nowhere to be found, and that’s what everybody wants to see. Why is Sonya following Dolph around? Are they an item now? How did THAT happen? This match doesn’t last very long. Dolph wins with the superkick. I think that may be the first time Dolph won a match since No Mercy 2017! Or was it 18? The one where he put his career up against The Miz. Speaking of Miz, he and Johnny are up next. Unless Bray Wyatt shows up, this should be the segment of the night.
Miz & Johnny!
This is what I’ve been waiting for! Miz may not have been at Wrestlemania this year (apparently he had some kind of illness), but he’s still killing it! He immediately takes credit for retaining the
Smackdown tag team titles from his couch! This is followed by an impromptu LIVE performance of Miz and Johnny’s new hit single, Hey Hey (Ho Ho)! That song just went gold TODAY! I’m so proud of Miz, he’s like a son to me! And now he’s a hip hop rapper! Look out other hip-hoppers! BUT WAIT! The Usos are here to ruin this awesome segment! I don’t care what they said because I was enjoying the song. Here comes New Day. I’m gonna get sick. There’s gonna be a triple threat next week. I’m just mad the song got interrupted. Moving on.
Match #3: Forgotten Sons vs. Lucha House Party
Let me be clear about this, I have no clue who these people are. But thanks to everyone’s good friend Justin Patterson, I know their names at least. We have Blake, who was tag team partners with Buddy Murphy in another life, one guy who I know only as Cutler, and my personal favorite of the three, Jackson Ryker. He’s the biggest and the strongest, and also the roughest looking, so I have the highest hopes for him out of the three. Let’s see what they can do in the ring!
I’m told by the announce team that two of these are former US Marines, so we know those two are badass right off the bat. Blake and Cutler don’t have the best definition, and they look like they haven’t seen the sun in a while. Meanwhile, the biggest and baddest man on the team is standing outside the ring. I was really hoping he’d get in there and smash the luchadors singlehandedly. I like their style in the ring. These guys are no-nonsense and mean as it gets. Just pound your opponents into the ground. Their tag team finish is a combination dragon sleeper and curb stomp off the ropes. Not bad, but I don’t know how well that’ll work against a larger opponent. Their entrance music is a banger too! I’m on board with this for now.
Match #4: Sheamus vs. Cal Bloom
I don’t know who Cal Bloom is, but he’s in the wrong place at the wrong time. He’s not bad looking physically, but Sheamus makes him look small. With no crowd, it’s easy to tell just how hard Sheamus is hitting this dude. Brogue Kick and it’s over. Good to see Sheamus again, I’m a big fan! They talk about Jeff Hardy on commentary, but Sheamus is still standing right there and doesn’t look happy about it. This will make a good rivalry. I’d personally pay money to see Sheamus destroy Jeff Hardy.
Main Event: Braun Strowman vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
I guess if Nakamura wins this match, then he gets to fight Braun for the title? It wasn’t made clear. If Nakamura said it, I couldn’t understand it. We already saw this match a couple of weeks ago for the Intercontinental title, so I’m not expecting much to be different. These guys are hitting each other very hard. Nakamura goes for the Knee to Face, but Braun intercepts him with a powerslam and wins this thing. As I said, we’ve already seen this match before. BUT WAIT! This show isn’t over yet! Bray Wyatt shows up on the big screen to remind us he beat Cena. I’m not sure that victory actually counts given the circumstances, but he’s targeting Braun now. Of course, these two were brothers in arms as part of the Wyatt Family. But this is not that! Bray wants Braun to apologize for walking out on him years ago. Braun refuses, but Bray’s coming for the title anyway. It should be a very interesting rivalry!
My Final Thoughts on Smackdown (4/10/2020)
I came in hyped up for this show, and there was actually a lot of good that came out of it! I’ll never forgive the Usos for interrupting Miz & Johnny, but I got to see the Forgotten Sons for the first time! That dude Ryker is bad news, I better keep an eye on him! Bray Wyatt’s targeting Braun Strowman, and unlike all Bray’s other opponents, Braun isn’t the least bit intimidated. Or is he? Since they’re portraying the Fiend as a separate entity, would he even recognize Braun Strowman? I think this is the first time since Bray’s gimmick change that he’s facing a bigger opponent. I’m interested to see how his matches with Braun go. Personally, I’ve been calling for this for almost a year and I’m very excited. What will they do next? Your guess is as good as mine at this point. Join me next week to see what happens next!
