In case you missed it, today’s my birthday! But that won’t stop me from bringing you yet another review of tonight’s Smackdown episode. Tonight, we’ll see the immediate fallout from last Sunday’s Money in the Bank. Baron Corbin murdered two people and Otis won it by accident! But you don’t wanna hear about that here. Gird your loins Josh DeBord, because Charlotte will be on the show tonight! Let’s get into my WWE Smackdown results and review for 5/15/20.
Miz and Johnny open the show with an episode of Miz TV. Otis is the special guest, but he doesn’t wait for his intro. Now I know Otis has never been here before, but you’re supposed to wait for Miz to introduce you. Miz is not happy about it, I can tell by his body language. Miz gives Otis his props for winning, although it is pretty halfhearted. Looks like we’re getting an expository episode of Miz TV this week. We see some pictures of Otis as a baby, and he tells us he grew up with a learning disability. I’m not sure how true that is, but Miz and Johnny are making some pretty mean-spirited jokes about it. Come on Miz, you’re better than that. Miz and Johnny challenge Otis to a tag team match, but Tucker isn’t in the building, so Otis will have to find a new partner before the night’s over.
Match #1: Elias vs. Baron Corbin
That’s right, it’s the rivalry that just WON’T DIE! On the bright side, this may be the last time we see these two compete for a while. This a first-round match in the tournament to crown the next Intercontinental champion! The incumbent champion, one Sami Zayn, isn’t able to compete, so his title has been declared vacant. I haven’t been able to offer any thoughts on this situation yet, so I’ll do it briefly here. I think it’s a shame that he lost the title before he even got started. I’ve seen some people are mad that Brock Lesnar isn’t held to the same standard. It’s like talking to a wall at this point, but the difference is Brock has never not been able to compete. I remember being excited when Zayn won the title. He’s finally found his niche as a heel manager, but I don’t know where he’ll go from here. Having said that, please don’t ever make him be a babyface again. I love this version of him. I’ll be carrying a torch for Sami Zayn until he returns. Hopefully, he’ll get a rematch when he gets back.
How long is this King gimmick going to last for Corbin? Anyway, Corbin starts off right away working the old head and arm submission. I hate that move! Elias has a new shirt, for those of you who are interested. Elias dives from the top rope down to the floor. Is it just me, or is he taking a lot of inspiration from Randy Savage? I’ll allow it! Corbin tries to clown on Elias with his guitar, and Elias is NOT having it. It’s all Elias until he tries to walk the top rope Undertaker style. Elias has Corbin on the ropes and nearly gets himself disqualified. Come on man, this is for a title match. Don’t be an idiot. I might like Elias a little more if he actually wins a match. Corbin has the upper hand, but instead of going for the win, he smashes Elias’s guitar. Those are expensive, you dick! Elias wins with a surprise rollup. Corbin’s biggest weakness! Sorry, I couldn’t get more excited for this one, I’m just tired of seeing these two wrestle against each other. Find some new opponents!
Otis is backstage looking for a partner when he comes across Sheamus. He asks Sheamus to team with him, which is the smartest thing he’s ever done, but Sheamus rejects him. Bummer. I like Sheamus. Mandy tells him to ask Braun Strowman, but Braun’s not playing that game. But because he likes Otis, he’ll think about it.
Match #2: Naomi vs. Dana Brooke
This is a rematch from a few weeks ago. Dana Brooke actually beat Naomi to qualify for Money in the Bank if I remember right. Naomi goes for a pinning combination on Dana, but Dana simply sits down and wins this thing! Think Owen vs. Bret from Wrestlemania 10. Same finish, but without using the corner for the setup. That’s two straight wins over Naomi, who is clearly getting frustrated. Good for Dana! I’m glad to see she’s finally getting a chance.
Charlotte is here next with her big broad man shoulders for another promo. What’s the point of all this? Give this time to Bryan and Drew Gulak later on! It’s basically a bunch of bragging until Bayley and Sasha show up. Thank god! Who’s the heel here? Everybody’s just taking turns bragging! Like most of us, Bayley has no clue why Charlotte’s actually here and thinks Charlotte should just go to RAW and beat up Liv Morgan some more. That’s not very nice, leave her out of this! Charlotte tries to drive a wedge between Bayley and Sasha. Not gonna work Charlotte! We all know Sasha’s not going anywhere. She needs Bayley to give her a ride home. Bayley and Charlotte are supposed to have a champion vs. champion match next week. RATINGS!
Match #3: Daniel Bryan vs. Drew Gulak
A rematch from Elimination Chamber a few months back when these two tore it up! I expect this match to be close to that since there are 45 minutes of air time left. I love these two guys both as opponents and as a team. They’re cut from the same cloth, they even look like brothers. And they have similar ring styles! I wouldn’t be surprised if Gulak got a lot of his game from Daniel Bryan. This match begins with some great chain wrestling. TECHNIQUE! Don’t expect that to last for the entirety of this match though. There is a title at stake both of these guys can’t win this thing. Something’s gotta give. Both guys go for their submissions, but neither can get the win.
Both men are taking their time. They each know that with one wrong step, the other guy can beat them. Bryan goes for the old Danielson Special but Drew blocks the armbar. A test of strength is next. Not sure which way this will go, neither of these two is renowned for their strength. Drew gets control and dumps Bryan out to the floor. Gulak’s working the full nelson! That’s smart wrestling. We all know the history of Bryan’s neck. You’ll have to park a truck on top of Bryan to make him submit, but if he was going to give up, the full nelson would be the hold to make it happen! Bryan’s working the lower body, trying to even things up. Bryan goes for his own full nelson, possibly a dragon suplex, but Gulak slips out and slams Bryan on his head! Wow, that was brutal. Even with a surgically repaired neck, Bryan still won’t give up.
Gulak goes for a clothesline, but Bryan dodges and gets all of a German suplex. Bryan goes for the knee to the face, but Gulak moves. A quick exchange of near falls and Drew reapplies the Dragon Sleeper. Bryan counters into the LeBell Lock once again, but Drew finds a way out again. Bryan takes Drew down at the knee and it looks ugly. Bryan goes right for the heel hook submission and Gulak taps out. This kid has nothing to be ashamed of, but this wasn’t his night. Excellent match! I could watch these guys every week and never get bored. If you watch one match from this show this week, watch this one. You won’t be disappointed. TECHNIQUE!
Main Event: Miz & Johnny vs. Otis & ???
Who will be Otis’s tag team partner? He’s already asked Sheamus and Braun, but I’m expecting someone else. Maybe he’ll just have a handicap match. NOPE! Braun Strowman shows up and this is happening after all! Ok, Braun, but you’re the champ, so the last thing you need to do is allow yourself to be put in a vulnerable position. This isn’t smart on your part. Johnny and Otis start this thing. I like Johnny a lot, but he can’t outwrestle Otis. He was actually in the Pan American games years ago as a Greco-Roman wrestler. Otis and Braun do a double worm and elbow drop! Braun’s attempt was respectable, but still not as good as Otis! Braun and Otis get the win and dance the night away.
