TV back in the 90s was either hit or miss for a lot of great shows. When I was a kid I grew up watching anything scary on tv and fell in love with a lot of shows. So I decided to put together a list of 10 90s horror-themed television shows you should watch.
- Are You Afraid of the Dark.
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer
- The Hunger
- Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction,
- The Outer Limits
- American Gothic
10. X Files
The X Files ran on Fox from 1993 to 2018. X Files had 11 seasons and two feature films. This show blended sci-fi and horror and centered on two FBI agents, Mulder and Scully. Mulder and Scully worked on a series of top-secret files that tasked them with solving various cases involving the supernatural, sinister government organizations, and alien activity.
Millennium debuted in 1996 and ran for 3 seasons. Lance Henriksen played Frank Black who was a former FBI profiler. Black has the ability to look inside the minds of killers. He begins working with a mysterious organization called the Millennium Group. The group is obsessed with doomsday. Most episodes show him working nonstop with various serial killers, satanic conspiracies, and murderous cults. Unfortunately, the show ended in 1999 right before the millennium hit. Definitely a dark and eerie tv series.
7. Forever Knight
The 90s were also a big hit for anything involving vampires, so there have been a few television series about them. A huge and successful one is 1992’s, Forever Knight. Forever Knight is about a cop, who is an 800-year-old vampire who vows to protect his city. A city that is haunted by multiple evil and supernatural monsters and killers.
6. Kindred: The Embraced
This one is a one-season vampire show that premiered in 1996 and was about a vampire who falls in love with a mortal.
5. Dark Shadows
In 1991 Dark Shadows was revived for one season. That season told a different story apart from the original series.
4. Poltergeist: The Legacy
This 4 season show was incredibly spooky and fun. It was about a secret society that devoted their lives to protect people from evil forces.
3. Tales From The Crypt
Tales From The Crypt was absolutely frightening and twisted. The show ended in 1996 after 7 seasons and three feature-length films Demon Knight, Bordello of Blood, and Ritual.
2. Freddy’s Nightmares
Freddy’s Nightmares was only two seasons. Robert Englund played Freddy and hosted sort of a horror anthology show about various and different people being terrorized in the town of Springwood. Definitely think they should have kept that show going longer.
1. Friday the 13th: The Series
This show is one of the go-to shows that I have on DVD. There isn’t a connection to the Friday the 13th movies with this series though. It is about two cousins who inherit their late uncle’s antique shop where he had sold his soul to the devil and had everything in his store cursed. Each season, the cousins track down the people who have purchased a number of antiques from the store and since then have been surrounded by mysterious deaths. This spooky and eerie show lasted for 3 long seasons and is available on Amazon to buy.
With how television has been for the past decade, I still believe the 90s were the best years for horror-themed television shows. Most of these still can be found anywhere on the net or on various streaming devices and on DVD and Blu Ray.
