2019 NFL Season First Quarter Wrap Up

Hello NFL fans, can you believe we are already a quarter of the way through the 2019 NFL season? Time is flying faster then AB getting cut. Too soon? Let’s take a look at what has happened this past month and what to expect moving forward into the second quarter of the season. Let’s get it!

The never-ending saga that is Antonio Brown

  • Started this year with the Oakland Raiders, destroyed his feet in a chyron chamber
  • Threatened to retire over not being able to use an outdated helmet
  • Threatened to attack and called Raiders GM Mike Mayock a racial slur,
  • He recorded a youtube video on how he is more than just a football player while in the background a private phone conversation between him and coach Gruden played
  • He posted a letter on social media of the fines he earned while being a no show to training camp
  • Apologies to the Raiders team and management
  • He then wants to get released
  • Gets released and loses out on his 30 mil signing bonus
  • Patriots sign him to a 2 year deal with a 9 million signing bonus
  • Two sexual assault cases come out against Brown
  • He makes his season debut against Miami as a Patriot
  • Gets cut that next week by the Patriots
  • Filed two grievances, one against the Patriots and one against the Raiders

New England Patriots:

The Patriots are 4-0 and have actually gotten better and I mean much better than last year. This defense has been elite to start the season. It looks as if this could be the best Patriots team yet. Tom Brady at 42 years old 1,061 yards, 7 TD, 1 Int, 97.5 Passer Rating. Yes, he is 42 years old. Expect the Pats to make it once again to the AFC Championship with ease.

Patrick Mahomes/ Chiefs:

Remember when critics were saying Mahomes wasn’t going to repeat what he did last season, yeah well that was short-lived. 1,510 passing yards, 10 TD, 0 INT, 120.4 Passer Rating. Did I mention this is without Chiefs all-pro WR Tyreek Hill, and starting RB Damian Williams, oh yeah and his starting LT Fisher. This young man can do it all and has guided his team to a 4-0 record thus far. Mahomes is just phenomenal in every sense of the word. He is flat out dangerous, and this Chief team will go as far as he takes them. The Chief defense is much better formed than last year. This team is dangerous. Very dangerous.

Cam Newton:

Ladies and gentlemen, I believe it is time to say goodbye to Cam Newton aka Superman! Listen I am the biggest Cam fan, I absolutely love what he does for the game and for the kids. He is super gifted and talented, he gave us thrilling victories and performances. Here is the problem, either he has lost all of his arm strength or he is beyond injured and needs to either retire or take a full year off to properly heal his throwing shoulder. Newton threw for over 4,000 yards in back to back years as a rookie and sophomore in this league. He hasn’t since. 2015 feels like it was twenty years ago when Cam won the MVP. Cam has been out since week 3, and rookie QB Kyle Allen has gone 2-0 in his stead. Allen is slated to start this week as well, Newton being is out indefinitely. Head coach Ron Rivera needs to make the decision and tell Cam, who he loves to take the year off and HEAL.

QB Injuries:

Cam Newton, Sam Darnold, Drew Brees, Big Ben, Mitch Trubisky, and Nick Foles have all been hurt in this early phase of this season. Big Ben is the only one from this group that is definitely out for the rest of 2019, as for the others they will return shortly besides Foles and Brees who should return by weeks 8-10.

Biggest Shock: Andrew Luck Retirement

Our Fantasy Football draft was going on, we were in the fifth round when my best friend Kevin Wade looked like he received the most alarming, nastiest text you could ever get, and then bam it hit all of our phones like a virus. ESPN alerts were going off, and there it was, Colts QB Andrew Luck is announcing his retirement from the NFL. I was flabbergasted and confused like no other. I definitely understand his reasoning. It’s still super shocking though and I already miss watching him play this game that I love. I was a huge fan of Andrew Luck.

Biggest Disappointment- Baker Mayfield/ Cleveland Browns:

Listen I was on the hype train like no other with this team and still remain on that train. The Browns are currently 2-2 and are coming off a huge win against Baltimore this past Sunday. That doesn’t mean they are off the hook. Head coach Freddie Kitchen has looked lost and confused as the head coach of this football team. The offensive line has been a huge liability, OBJ has not shown up besides in week 2 against a very weak Jets team, and Baker has been morbid for the majority of this past month.

Baker going into week 5… 1,147 passing yards, 4 TD, 6 INT, 77.2 passer rating. Terrible numbers for a potential MVP candidate heading into this season. Things need to change, Baker needs to stay off Twitter, or just stop having feuds with ex-head coach (Rex Ryan), and radio host Colin Cowherd. If Baker plays like he did this past Sunday watch out NFL. Baker needs to relax and stay poised in the pocket, too much scrambling and moving out. plant your feet and make the correct read Mayfield.

This season has been a heck of a lot of fun so far. Many teams sitting in that 2-2 position right now. More teams than ever are looking like Jeckyl and Hyde. The parity is at an all-time high and the NFC is up in the air. This season will continue to be fun.
