Hey everyone it’s Josh from DeBord Room, Regularly Scheduled Hostilities, and Wednesday Night Wars. I haven’t written in a while due to the fact I podcast now 3 times a week but I will write when I get that itch and I have it today! I’ll be discussing AEW and the 5 things they need to do IMO to improve there product.
I am what they say an “AEW hater” as I criticize things they do as their stupid indy marks never find anything wrong. I have watched every AEW show they have had thus far and gave them a fair chance to win me over. It’s not my fault they haven’t. IMO opinion NXT is better in overall show quality, storyline building, and match quality. But not to fear Josh is here and I’m going help AEW get over more! These are the 5 things AEW needs to do to improve their product!!!!!
5.) Turn Cody Rhodes Heel
This is easy to me. Why Cody is so beloved is beyond me. Yes, without him there is no AEW and all that. But, man the guy is a VP of the company and helps play a role in the booking. He’s also the TNT Champion. Which is basically the TV title right? He’s a generic version of what John Cena did with the US Belt to get it more relevant. The problem is Cody isn’t as great as he thinks he is. But, there is a lot of stuff he does well, he just isn’t great at anything.
Turning him heel helps out on a lot of fronts. One, he comes off as a cocky, arrogant asshole anyways so he already has the heel vibe. Two, imagine Cody putting over some of these younger guys (Orange Cassidy, Jungle Boy, Darby Allin, etc) as a heel with real heat! How do you turn someone so beloved heel?
Easy, have him go off after almost losing his title to a babyface and say he is sick of fighting for the fans and that it’s his company he made and he will do what he wants. This would make Cody interesting for once as well. The only interesting thing about him is his awful neck tattoo. Being heel would give Cody an edge he doesn’t really have as a babyface as well. Imagine the feuds with Omega, Hangman Adam Page, Orange Cassidy, and all the other babyfaces he could have and with Cody being one of the more popular and well known AEW guys he will make each guy he fights more relevant
This is something AEW probably won’t do because the fans treat Cody like a god but it’s something that needs to be done if they want to improve the product and make it more interesting. Just think about it. Next!
4.) Stop signing people and get over the talent you have
Another issue I have with AEW is the whole “we aren’t going to sign all ex WWE guys” thing that they said they weren’t going to do. Well, Christ Jericho, Jon Moxley (Dean Ambrose), Matt Hardy, Brodie Lee (Luke Harper), FTR (The Revival), Pac (Neville), Dustin Rhodes (Goldust), etc.
Signing some is ok, I mean I get it your going to need guys with a name that people know to draw people in (Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy) but do you think they’re done?
With WWE releasing all those people months ago I feel like they are far from done signing them and it’g going to hurt the talent that they have from growing even more. Orange Cassidy is one guy they have done well with. MJF as well (more on him later). But, with regards to there “homegrown talent”, they have failed!
Yes, Kenny Omega is supposedly one of the best in the world? Well, they have yet to show us that. He had the match with Moxley which was basically a hardcore match with tons of spots. To new viewers who have heard of people such as Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks, they need to show us what makes these talents special. Not just do spot fests. Young Bucks are very talented but their matches are 3803428449 spots and 340384 superkicks.
You have talents such as Brian Cage, Lance Archer, Darby Allin, Jurassic Express, Santana and Ortiz, Wardlow, Lucha Bros, and many many more. They have all the talent they need to succeed. But you have to get the fans to emotionally get attached to them and care about what they are doing. They have yet to do that outside of Cody, which is why I stated above he should be a heel because that would make fans care about the talent Cody is going against even more.
They really need to improve their long term booking and get these newer guys over. Which leads me to my next thing.
3.) Stop putting new signings right in the title picture
Sign Lance Archer, put him in a match with Cody, Archer loses disappears for weeks. Sign Brodie Lee have him lose to John Moxley, have him disappear for weeks. Sign Brian Cage have him lose to Jon Moxley, then come up with a ridiculous reason for why he lost.
The first issue is within the first month of each of these guys AEW careers they are all built up as monsters then thrown right into the title picture. Then they lose and they lose some of that aura they had when they first came in and looked like badasses. Don’t forget Wardlow (it wasn’t a title match but) losing to Cody in his first match as well. WWE does this all the time where they have a shiny new toy and want to milk it for all it’s worth within the first month. AEW needs to calm down. You can sign a guy and have them look dominant for a while before throwing them into the title picture. Brodie Lee doesn’t seem as dominant and the Dark Order doesn’t seem as scary now, Lance Archer needs 10 minutes to beat Joey Janella and just beats up guys backstage now, and Brian Cage loses matches by a towel being thrown in.
It’s because AEW backs themselves into a corner that they don’t have too. You have tons of other guys on the roster you can have in these spots. THEY HAVE A LOADED ROSTER! It hurts the new guys once they come in hot and lose so early the proof is already there. Please stop feeding your new guys to the top stars and putting them in title matches. Be more patient. I promise it’ll pay off down the road. Don’t be like WWE when they almost ruined Bray Wyatt and his new Fiend gimmick (Hell in a Cell vs Seth Rollins and losing his belt to Goldberg) by backing yourself into a corner.
WHO DO WE PUT IN THESE TITLE MATCHES THEN?
You have over 80 people on your roster and you do 2 shows a week. Use the other people on the roster, not the new people you want to get over. See my number one thing to see who would make the perfect AEW Champion and it wouldn’t make anyone look weak.
2.) Fix your Women’s Divison ASAP
The AEW Women’s division is a complete disaster. It’s by far the worst in all of professional wrestling. Yes, lately they have had issues with injuries and whatever but let’s not act like it was good before then. Don’t lie to yourself! The most over woman they have is Britt Baker and rightfully so.
She’s badass! She can wrestle, she’s hot, and she’s great on the mic. But outside of her your most over woman is Aubrey Edwards WHO IS A REFEREE!!!!!!!!! To quote my co-host of Wednesday Night Wars (which you can watch each Wednesday at 7:45 Est time on the AEE Facebook and Youtube page) said “The women’s title looks like something I could buy at Wal-Mart.”
It’s easily the worst looking belt in all of professional wrestling. AEW has shown they don’t care about the women as they barely give them any time. Two weeks or so ago NXT gave the women 25 mins on their show and AEW gave the women 5. Yeah, you read that right. NXT has the best women’s division in wrestling and it really helps their product stand out.
Tessa Blanchard is a free agent, right? Why the hell would she go to AEW? Who can she work with to get her over? WWE is where the money is at for Tessa and she knows it. AEW needs to invest some serious time and resources into this division and make it mean something. The matches are bad with tons of bad missed spots, the mic work is bad (outside of Britt)
Hell, I was getting behind Penelope Cruz after her great showing in the title match she lost but then BOOM she’s gone from TV for weeks after pretty much making her an afterthought.
Even the dumb indy marks will agree AEW’s women’s division is by far one of their biggest disappointments. AEW you can do better. Your women deserve better. You got the talent, use it! Get it together!!!!!!
1.) GIVE MJF THE AEW CHAMPIONSHIP AND MAKE IT MEAN SOMETHING
This is what needs to happen very soon! Jon Moxley’s title run has been okay at best. Yes, I understand with COVID going wild it’s been difficult.
But for the last month, all Moxley has done is run around parking lots screaming. AEW has done a great job of making MJF look like a star. He is one of the few people they have been able to do this with. He’s undefeated, has a great look, has tons of charisma, and is fantastic on the mic.
The time is now to put the belt on him. It also would help to have a guy that’s a “homegrown” AEW guy carry the belt which they have yet to do so far (Chris Jericho a WWE guy was the first AEW Champion). I know my co-host Anthony DiSalvatore is loving this since he’s a huge MJF fan but this is the truth.
They have been protecting this guy and making him look great and it’s time to cash in on that. This guy has the potential to be one of the biggest stars in all of wrestling and easily be the biggest star in AEW. Love him or hate him the guy literally has superstar written all over him. AEW stop being cute and book this feud and get the belt on MJF. There is tons of other stuff for Moxley to do that can help him and others get over without him holding the belt hostage. The future of AEW could be bright and the product could be better. The best way to get it started is to get the belt on MJF. Hey, Tony Khan stop watching re-runs of WCW Nitro to book your shows and stop worrying about a stupid ass video game and focus on your product. The best way to immediately get AEW on a better path is to put the belt on MJF as soon as they can. Why? We’ll because he’s better than you!!
