So Week 2 of the 2019 NFL season has come and gone. A lot of big news. A lot of shockers. The Dolphins got stomped by the Patriots so that’s not a shocker. But we’re not talking about the AFC East. We’re here for the North. The AFC North.
Coming into Sunday, Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens won their first game beating down the Dolphins. Andy Dalton had a fantastic game, but his Cincinnati Bengals couldn’t beat Seattle. The Steelers were EMBARRASSED by Tom Brady and those wonderful Patriots. And the Browns, god, the Browns were terrible. Onto week 2, Pittsburgh faced Seattle, Cincinnati faced San Francisco, Baltimore faced Arizona and on Monday Night Football, Cleveland took on the New York Jets. Let’s go through the games from this week.
Cincinnati Bengals vs San Francisco 49ers
After last week’s near loss to the Seattle Seahawks, you expected the Bengals to win this game in Week 2…they didn’t. I predicted that they would lose but not by this much, not this badly. It wasn’t Miami Dolphins bad, but it wasn’t good. Don’t get me wrong. Andy Dalton was still good. He went 26 for 42 for 311 yards, 2 TDs, and an INT. Their receivers were great as well. Unfortunately, their defense was crushed by San Francisco. Jimmy Garoppolo was really good. 17 for 25, 297 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT. The 49ers rushing core was great. Matt Breida had 121 yards on 12 attempts. Cincinnati fails to win this game and gets blown out. They go 0-2.
Stud of The Game: Jimmy Garoppolo – 17/25, 297 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT
Result: CIN 17 – SF 41
Baltimore Ravens vs Arizona Cardinals
The Ravens and Lamar Jackson coming off a hot start last week, came into this game with momentum and they came out with the win. Lamar Jackson’s completion percentage wasn’t as good as last week, but he was solid. 24 for 37, 272 yards and 2 TDs. He also rushed on his own for 120 yards. Arizona was good as well. Kyler Murray was amazing. 25 for 40, 349 yards but didn’t score one passing TD. Baltimore comes out on top 23-17.
Stud of The Game: Lamar Jackson – 24/37, 272 yards, 2 TDs; 120 rushing yards
Result: BAL 23 – ARI 17
Cleveland Browns vs New York Jets
The Cleveland Browns was an embarrassment last week against Tennessee. They needed to redeem themselves…and they did just that in this game. Yes, media pundits say this proved nothing since the Jets are still a mediocre team even with Le’Veon Bell on their team. Full coverage on this game will be detailed on Bark Of The Dawg this week.
The Browns made a nice first step in the right direction. Baker Mayfield played like the real Baker Mayfield. 19 for 35, 325 yards, 1 TD but unfortunately, he gave up his 4th interception in two weeks. Odell Beckham Jr was DAT MAN, 161 yards with an outstanding TD on an 89-yard catch and run. Cleveland rebounded from that embarrassment last week and hopefully next week they can continue the momentum. Browns win on Monday Night Football. 23-3.
Stud of The Game: Odell Beckham Jr- 6 Rec. 161 yards, 1 TD
Result: CLE 23 – NYJ 3
Pittsburgh Steelers vs Seattle Seahawks
The Steelers coming off a laughing stock of a game last week only scoring 3 points against New England, had to redeem and in this game, they almost did. Russell Wilson went off on Pittsburgh going nearly perfect with 300 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs and went 29/35 on their passes.
Here’s the unfortunate thing for Pittsburgh. Ben Roethlisberger had 75 yards but that’s not the big news. He walked off the field with an injury. Turns out that unfortunately, Big Ben will need SEASON ENDING elbow surgery, so Pittsburgh’s chances of winning the AFC North just went down the drain.
Backup QB Mason Rudolph wasn’t bad for Pittsburgh in Big Ben’s absence, scoring 2 TDs for 112 yards. Maybe they have hope in him, but hope doesn’t win football games. Seattle wins another close game to a second consecutive AFC North opponent, 28-26.
Stud of The Game: Russell Wilson- 29/35, 300 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs
Result: PIT 26– SEA 28
Baltimore Ravens 2-0
Cleveland Browns 1-1
Pittsburgh Steelers 0-2
Cincinnati Bengals 0-2
Baltimore may have what it takes to win the North. Lamar Jackson is amazing.
Pittsburgh is now without Ben Roethlisberger for the rest of the season. This is terrible for them.
Cleveland still has some things to fix but this was a good step in the right direction and Baker will pick it up.
Cincinnati needs some serious reorganization. This score shouldn’t have happened with an Andy Dalton led team.
Baltimore loses to Kansa City 40-20
Cleveland beats LA Rams 27-24
Pittsburgh loses to San Francisco 30-10
Cincinnati loses to Buffalo 21-20
