Welcome to the AFC South throw down, where we recap the AFC Division games from this past weekend. Go ahead and grab a seat, let’s throw it down!!!

  • Top Rushing Performance:
  • Leonard Fournette

  • Top Receiving Performance:
  • A.J. Brown
  • 3 REC 94 Yards 2 TDs
  • Top Defense Performance:
  • Houston Texans
  • 3 turnovers 3 sacks 16PA

Let’s get into the Breakdowns:

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Denver Broncos

While Minshew is my ROTY, this victory was all about Fournette! This man went into half time with 34 rushing yards. He would finish the game with an outstanding 225 on the ground. Between the rushing and defensive adjustments made at halftime, the Jaguars owned the second half. The INT by Harrison late in the first half was a major momentum shifter. After that turnover, the Broncos just couldn’t get anything together until late in the fourth quarter. The Jags defense was missing Jalen Ramsey this past weekend and it was apparent as Flacco was able to air it out at times over the secondary. I do have to point out on the final drive of the game with the Jaguars down one point. Minshew dissected the Broncos defense for a couple long pass plays, the used Fournette to position the ball on the field and run out the time before Lambo kicked the 33 yard FG to win the game.

Next up for the Jaguars is a trip to Carolina to take on the Panthers. Just as it was last week for the Texans, the Jaguars need to neutralize CMC. He is the heart and soul of that offense, stop him and the Jaguars have a three game win streak.

Carolina Panthers @ Houston Texans

Someone needs to go check on Deshaun Watson, as soon as possible. People blame the poorly timed trick play call that absolutely destroyed the only momentum the Texans would have in this game. From my point of view, once Stills came up limping Watson could never get comfortable. You could point out he was sacked six times, but you also need to point out that he was holding on to the ball and was wrapped up a couple of times. In a game where the defense forced and recovered three fumbles and your team still loses is mind-blowing. That trick play was an all or nothing call. If it works, O’Brien looks like he is changing things up and it’s working. On the flip side reality set in as Hopkins threw a pick that would shift momentum to the Panthers and they would score their only TD of the game. Watson had things rolling late in the 4th quarter and it looked as if the Texans were going to march down and put up some points up and win the game. The Panthers defense came up big time with a strip-sack of their own and turned it into three points.

The Texans welcome Atlanta into NRG stadium. I doubt Watson plays like he did last week, especially against a high profile QB in Matty Ice. I expect this one to be a shoot-out, if Texans can keep Julio Jones under 100 yards, then they have a great chance to pull out a victory. I expect Will Fuller to have a big game for the Texans.

Oakland Raiders @ Indianapolis Colts

What an upset! Did anyone expect the 1-2 Raiders to come into Indy and put up 31 points on the Colts? The Raiders got off to a hot start, even when momentum appeared to shift they would still answer back. Carr fumbled in the 1st quarter on their third drive of the day. Having already score TDs on the first two drives they were marching along quite well. Indy would recover that fumble and score their first points of the day, but the Raiders were ready to answer back. Just as it seemed that Brissett was going to tie up the game at 24-24, Harris would jump the route and return it for a pick-six almost sealing the victory for the Raiders.

The Colts travel to Kansas City next week. Another performance by the Colts defense like last weekend and the Chiefs will put up 31 points in the first half. Brissett will need to rise up and show out against the Chiefs defense. Even though I don’t believe the Colts will be able to stay up with the Chiefs high powered offense. Colts drop one on the road and fall to 2-3 on the season.

Tennessee Titans @ Atlanta Falcons

A game decided by half time, not because it was a blowout, but because the second half was boring. The Titans were playing clock management, as they should, and the Falcons just couldn’t keep marching down the field. In the first half though it was an exciting game. A 55-yard pass to A.J. Brown from Mariota jump-started the scoring for both teams. Atlanta would answer back, the one and only time they did answer back though. The Titans would then dissect the defense and move across the field slowly but surely. The second scoring drive for the Titans would eat up over six minutes off the clock, the longest drive of the game. With some stout defense and clock management, the Titans would coast through the second half and win their second game of the year.

Next week Tennessee welcomes the Bills who will not come quietly. A team that has picked on the bottom of the barrel teams this year just held the Brady-led Patriots to 16 points. Maybe the Bills just play harder against the Patriots? If they don’t, I expect Tennessee to have their hands full and drop this game at home. Maybe Mariota shows up and they win the game, they are 2-0 outside of the AFC South and only AFC South team with a positive differential at the moment.

Next Weeks Schedule:

  • Buffalo @ Tennessee – 12:00pm cst on CBS
  • Jacksonville@ Carolina- 12:00pm cst on CBS
  • Atlanta @ Houston – 12:00pm cst on FOX
  • Indianapolis @ Kansas City – 7:20 pm cst on NBC

Current AFC South Standing: The entire division sits at 2-2. A lot of parity in the AFC South.

My Predictions: The AFC South goes 2-2 in Week 5. See you next week when we throw it down!
