Have you ever watched a movie and thought, “how much time did I just waste.” That’s exactly what occurred when I watched this movie. It’s directed by Scott Akerman (Comedy Bang Bang) and stars Zach Galifianakis.
I love between two ferns, the episodes are great because the celebrity is not prepared for Zach’s harsh questions. In this movie however they are, it’s all scripted. If it’s not obvious to the viewer, you find this out at the end of the film during the credits because they play outtakes. At this point in the film (the end) I believe it was the only time I laughed out loud.
The only enjoyment from the movie comes from celebrity cameos. There is an abundance of cameos, but most of them are not enjoyable because it’s the celebrity sitting in a chair for a minute with a straight face. Will Ferrel is the only beacon of light in this movie because his short parts are actually funny.
One big issue with this film is that the film itself does not know what it is. At the start of the film which is the same as the trailer, Matthew McConaughey is in a box that has a pipe break and fills with water. At this point, I thought ok now it’s going to be Zach playing different pranks on celebrities. It’s going to be Between Two Ferns ramped up a bit, almost with a Jackass type of feeling. But no, it’s not, the intro scene is the only one like that.
What this is an SNL (Funny or Die) sketch turned into a movie. Yet some of those movies are now cult classics like MacGruber or Night at The Roxbury. This movie is not one of those. They had a good thing going and tried to capitalize on it.
This movie almost feels like five different writers wrote different segments, but were not allowed to talk to each other. If you love Between Two Ferns or Zach Galifianakis it’s up to you if you want to watch this.
My recommendation is to keep watching the show on Funny or Die, but don’t waste your time with this movie.
