The sequel to Eddie Murphy’s Coming to America is ditching a theatrical release and coming to Amazon Prime Video. Amazon Studio bought the film from Paramount for $125 Million. The movie was sold due to the devastated global box office. You can catch Coming 2 America on Amazon Prime on December 18th.
Movies being released direct-to-video is common this year and maybe the new norm as theaters face closures. Other Amazon premiers include Borat 2 and Bill and Ted: Face the Music. This is more unfortunate news for the box office. AMC Theaters revealed this week that they will be out of funds by early 2021. AMC will either seek new loans or dramatically raise ticket prices to stay solvent.
A new problem with the switch to direct-to-video arises with Coming 2 America; product placement. Much like the first film, we will see big-name companies like McDonald’s and Crown Royal playing a part. These in-movie ads are used to reduce filming costs and brand awareness. But the contracts were negotiated with the golden arches on the big screen. Before Amazon can fully secure the rights, they need to come to a new agreement with both of the invested companies.
Coming 2 America follows Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem as he ascends to King. He learns of an unknown son in New York and vows to return. Murphy is joined by Arsenio Hall once again with an all-new cast of prominent New York actors.
