Hey guys Tony from Toned in Entertainment here and I’ve decided to go back and look at moments in pop culture that are regarded as just bad.
The first of these moments is highly regarded as one of the worst wrestling matches in history. Today I’m looking at Hogan vs Warrior 2 from WCW’s Halloween Havoc PPV in 1998.
I’ve obviously seen this match as a wrestling fan and have my opinion before watching this match again. But I’m trying my best to watch it with a blank slate.
Now the first thing I did before watching this match was re-watch Hulk Hogan vs Ultimate Warrior from WrestleMania 6 in 1990. While by no means a technical masterpiece there was something exhilarating about watching this match again.
The intensity that these 2 mega superstars had during this match. The electricity of the crowd not knowing which of these babyfaces would walk out of Toronto as the WWF Champion. And while this match will not go down as one of the greatest of all times it’s still enjoyable to watch till this day. To be perfectly honest, when Hogan misses the leg drop and Warrior nails him with the splash and gets the three count I still made me smile.
Now my smile was turned upside down when I finished watching Hogan vs Warrior 2 from Halloween Havoc 1998. Many have said this match only existed because Hogan wanted to feed his ego and get the revenge win. If this is true it would have been better off for Hogan to just be 0-1 against The Warrior then to have this stinker of a match ever take place.
Bad is not even the word to describe this match. It’s downright boring and dreadful to watch. Honestly there is not one redeeming thing here. The pacing is awful. The wrestling is terrible. And the crowd is downright silent. Even interference by The Giant and Vincent fail to achieve any reaction. Hogan can’t even get his dirty tactics right as he screws up a fireball meant for The Warrior and instead burns himself.
The crowd does show a little bit of life when The Warrior begins to make a comeback and lands several clotheslines on The Hulkster. But during this comeback Eric Bischoff distracts the ref and this allows Hulk Hogans nephew Horace to jump in the ring and nail The Warrior with a pathetic chair shot to the back.
Without any type of follow up, not even a signature leg drop, Hogan jumps on top of the Warrior, grabs a hand full of trunks and gets the three count.
That’s Hogan vs Warrior 2.
Was it as bad as I remember?
It was actually worse.
The only way I could recommend watching this match is if you’re having a tough time trying to go to sleep at night. Put this match on and it should have you sleeping like a baby in no time.
