Meat-Fest: WWE NXT UK Review for August 7th

WWE’s UK Division is full of potential and great talent. From the WWE United Kingdom Champion Walter to the UK Women’s Champion Toni Storm to the NXT UK Tag Team Champions Liverpool’s Number One Zack Gibson and James Drake who refers to themselves as Grizzled Young Veterans. NXT UK is almost 3 weeks away from their 2nd UK TakeOver in history, this time in Cardiff, Wales. So far, there have been two confirmed matches for the card. WWE UK Women’s Champion Toni Storm defends her UK Women’s Championship against her former best friend, now bitter enemy Kay Lee Ray. Also WWE UK Champion Walter defends his UK Championship against the first UK Champion in history, Tyler Bate.

This week’s episode of NXT UK continued to build toward TakeOver Cardiff. Let’s break it all down.

Noam Dar vs Ashton Smith

The Scottish Supernova Noam Dar has been cocky as of late. Running his mouth but backing it up. Here he had a match with upstart Ashton Smith and while Smith tried his hardest, Dar came out on top. After the match Dar says he makes a lot of money and that he will be at TakeOver Cardiff.

Big Strong Threat

British Strong Style, comprised of Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate and Trent Seven has run the NXT UK Division since its inception. They were the top of the division then things began to change. NXT UK signed arguably the most destructive man in wrestling, the Austrian Juggernaut Walter and Walter proceeded to shock the world and ended Dunne’s almost 2 year run as WWE United Kingdom Champion. Walter then beat Dunne again and started his own faction. Known as Imperium. At first it was Walter leading the team of Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner to prominence. Then during a tag team match between British Strong Style and Imperium, there was a fourth man introduced to Walter’s faction. Former NXT Tag Team Champion and former member of SANITY, Alexander Wolfe. The four men one by one dismantled Dunne, Seven and Bate. First injuring Bate and then obliterating Seven but eventually Tyler Bate came back and challenged Walter to a match for the UK Championship.

This week Bate warned Walter that he will make Walter pay and become the first 2-time WWE UK Champion. I believe it’s a long shot, but we’ll see what happens.

Tag Team Turmoil

No, not the Attitude Era kind. The Grizzled Young Veterans came out and talked about Gallus, comprised of The Coffey Brothers Joe & Mark, and Wolfgang, wanted a shot at the NXT UK Tag Team Championship. Then Gallus came out and confronted GYV. After bantering back and forth, they were interrupted by Mark Andrews and The Modfather, Flash Morgan Webster who also wanted a shot at the NXT UK Tag Team Championship. The segment ended soon after. Later it was revealed that NXT UK General Manager Johnny Saint wants Webster and Andrews to prove themselves so next week, Webster faces Mark Coffey one on one.

Women’s Division

NXT’s fashionista Jinny and her new muscle, former Mae Young Classic competitor, Jazzy Gabert faced off against the bubbly Xia Brookside and her partner, the talented Piper Niven. Gabert showed her power and so did Niven. The first UK Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley got involved and fought Niven all the way backstage, continuing the rivalry they’ve had over the last month or so. Brookside was left alone and Jinny and Gabert won the match.

Soon after Toni Storm and Kay Lee Ray had part two of their interview from last week about their backstory and how they used to be friends and predicting what will happen at TakeOver Cardiff.

Main Event Meat-Fest

Just before the main event, cocky Knockout Artist Kassius Ohno got into the face of NXT UK’s newest acquisition, the Russian powder keg Ilja Dragunov. They’ll collide in a match next week.

In the main event, two meaty men fought like mad men as the leader of Gallus, Joe Coffey faced Bomber Dave Mastiff. These two kicked the crap out of one another. Unfortunately it ended in a double count out and the two needed medical attention, but they still wanted to rip each other’s heads off. These two will probably fight again at TakeOver Cardiff and I think they could tear the house down.

This was a good episode of NXT UK and as the days to TakeOver Cardiff count down, who will gain the upper hand? We’ll find out in the coming weeks.
