It was a big upset that us at AEE could not ignore and had to write about the implications of this game. The 3rd ranked Georgia Bulldogs have been beaten by the unranked Gamecocks of South Carolina. Our own college writer, Matt Tracht predicted South Carolina would cover but even he didn’t think they would win.
This game went into two overtimes and was a thriller to the very end. South Carolina won when their placekicker, Parker White, nailed a 24- yard field goal to win the game in the second OT. In a surprising fashion, not only did South Carolina beat, the Bulldogs of Georgia but, they had beaten them in Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. The final score was 20-17 and this was easily the biggest win of Will Muschamp’s tenure with his squad out of Columbia.
Here are some highlights of some key big plays in the game. We already talked about the winning field goal at the start of this article so here are a few others. On Georgia’s possession in the second overtime, their placekicker Rodrigo Blankenship missed a 42- yard attempt wide to the left on fourth down. What’s more interesting is the Gamecocks could have put this game away earlier. In the first overtime, Gamecock CB Israel Mukuamu intercepted a pass ending Georgia’s first possession. However, White missed his field goal attempt wide fight sending the game to the 2nd overtime.
It is important to note that Makuamu had picked off three passes, including one for a touchdown in this game. Receiver Bryan Edwards for the Gamecocks caught 6 passes for 78 yds and a touchdown. Freshman QB Ryan Hilinski completed 15 out of 20 passes for 116 yards and a TD. Hilinski had to leave the game in the third quarter due to an injury. Freshman QB Dakerson Joyner finished the game for the Gamecocks. Bulldog kicker Blankenship kicked a field goal to break a scoreless game with a 50- yard field goal. South Carolina answered with a nine-play 93-yard drive that ended with Hilinski finding Edwards for the TD pass. Georgia regained the lead early in the second quarter when D’Andre Swift scored a touchdown. The Gamecocks tied up the game at 10-10 onParker White’s49-yard field goal. Then Makuamu intercepted Jake Fromm and took it 53 yards to the house for a TD. Georgia scored to tie the game at 17-17. South Carolina had a change during the game to win. But Parker White missed on a 57- yard field goal with 40 seconds left in regulation.
What an exciting game, that came down to the very end. With Georgia losing that will hurt them when it comes to the College Football Playoff. There is no shortage of teams that will look to move up and take the spot vacated by the Bulldogs. South Carolina played amazing and will look to keep up the momentum next week against the Florida Gators. Georgia will look to rebound when they play Kentucky. The next chance for them to prove themselves again will be when Georgia plays the Gators on November 2nd in Gainsville.
