With adaptations in the form of video games, films, novels, children’s books, and even religion. Star Wars is a dynasty fifty years in the making that all fans are excited to see and witness the end. With the latest trailer and news floating around people have been sharing rumors and ideas for how they hope everything will be tied together. The latest trilogy has done an outstanding job of reuniting the old cast with the new. Mark Hamil, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher to name a few. Their greatest strength is getting these established characters to pass on the torch to our newest heroes. However, for every flicker of light, there is even more darkness to threaten it. This leads us to Star Wars’ greatest character, Emperor Palpatine.
There are Jedi masters, badass bounty hunters, and scruffy looking nerf herders, but none of them compare to how impressive Palpatine is. How he is so overlooked in these movies to me is unbelievable. Darth Vader is often seen as one of the best villains in cinema history and even he kneels before the Emperor and asks, “ What is thy bidding, my master?” So why does the universe’s most awesome character bow to this guy?
In the first three installments, we learn of the origins of some of our favorite characters, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Senator Palpatine. The story centers on the training of Anakin while he is fighting the Separatists threat, which is being led by a shadow leader Darth Sidious.
While these new enemies are threatening the Jedi Order, the Senate has a new rising leader in Sheev Palpatine. Using his influence he becomes a huge supporter of the Jedi in hunting down and destroying the rebellion. While Palpatine works in politics to help the war effort, Darth Sidious plots and schemes to overthrow the Senate with his droid army. At his disposal are some great villains, like Darth Maul, General Grievous and Count Dooku. Obi-Wan and Anakin work hard to uncover the evil plans in motion while working with the Senate. While victories and failures come to both sides, Sheev Palpatine begins to rise to the position of Supreme Chancellor.
At the center of it all is Anakin Skywalker who is having visions of his loved ones dying and him not being strong enough to save them. With some guidance and words of wisdom, Palpatine leads Skywalker towards his ultimate destiny of leaving the Jedi Order and searching for the power himself to be the hero he thinks he needs to be. This leads him to the terrible realization that Sheev Palpatine and Darth Sidious are one and the same.
To put this into perspective for you, imagine World War II. Hitler was gathering one of the largest armies the world had ever seen and Winston Churchill was gathering the resistance to help stop them. Now imagine learning they were the same person and no matter which side lost, he was going to win. This is Emperor Palpatine.
With Machiavellian backstabbing, treachery and freaking force lightning he will go down as one of the best characters in cinema history. A central point in almost all of the star wars so far, it only makes sense that he shows up to put the finishing touches on the story that we have grown to love.
Like him or hate him the Emperor has proven to be an amazing character, that is always three steps ahead of anyone close to threatening him. Perhaps he has had a plan all along. When a Jedi dies he can come back and influence young padawans trying to learn their path. Who’s to say that the Sith can’t do the same thing?
The answer to why Vader bowed to the Emperor, is Darth Vader is smart. Star Wars the Rise of Skywalker will be released on December 20th, 2019. Stay tuned for all future news and trailers.
