The AEE Fantasy Start/Sit List – DEF edition – Week 13

The Fantasy Football 2019 NFL regular season. As we close out the regular season, let’s take a look at the best starts and sits heading into Week 13 of your fantasy football matchups.

Start of the Week: Carolina Panthers vs Washington Redskins

After a mediocre game against the New York Jets, Dwayne Haskins found himself in a familiar situation against the Detroit Lions, throwing an interception and losing a fumble. Though they won the game, Haskins did not play well and the Lions were serviceable for fantasy owners who streamed them. I think the Panthers are far better than the Lions and could end up as a top 5 fantasy defense this week. If you were lucky enough to get them off waivers or held on to them for this week, you should be rewarded nicely.

Start – Pittsburgh Steelers vs Cleveland Browns:

Until I see otherwise, I can’t trust the Cleveland Browns going into Pittsburgh to win a game they absolutely need if they have any hopes of reaching the playoffs. The Steelers defense is third in fantasy scoring on the year and they have more fumble recoveries than either the Patriots or 49ers defenses who are ranked first and second. Even with how the Browns have played lately, I’d be starting the Steelers.

Start – Philadelphia Eagles @ Miami Dolphins: This actually makes me nervous, because Ryan Fitzpatrick has been decent for fantasy football and has suppressed the defensive fantasy scoring of teams he’s faced recently. Don’t get me wrong, I still think the Eagles accrue double-digit fantasy points, I just don’t expect them to be a top-five unit, even against Miami. With that said, they’re still very much a startable defense this week.

Start – Kansas City Chiefs vs Oakland Raiders: I’ve been wrong about the Raiders multiple times this season, but I think they’re about to walk into a buzzsaw. The Chiefs absolutely cannot afford to lose this game and the defense has played much better over their last three games. If you’re feeling risky, I like the Chiefs defense this week.

Start – Denver Broncos vs Los Angeles Chargers: The Broncos have been one of the most underwhelming defenses this year considering their hiring of head coach, Vic Fangio. Even still, their second-best defensive performance of the season came against the Chargers and that was a road game. I think if you lost out on all the other streaming defenses available, you can pick up and play the Broncos this week.

Sit of the Week: Chicago Bears @ Detroit Lions

A shining example of why not to draft defenses early in your fantasy drafts, the Chicago Bears have been very disappointing this year. What was easily the best defense last year has been a middling affair all season long except for two games way back in weeks 3 and 4. Since then, the Bears’ defense has failed to top even 15 points in fantasy scoring, even with good matchups. I’d be avoiding the Bears for the rest of the season, as they’ll face the Cowboys, Packers, and Chiefs to close out the season.

Sit – New York Jets @ Cincinnati Bengals: I was all set to stream the Jets this week, but then the Cincinnati Bengals announced they are returning to Andy Dalton under center. It’s not like Dalton is a world-beater, but he’s far better than Ryan Finley and should be able to put up points on this Jets defense, which depresses the Jets’ ceiling for fantasy purposes. I’d avoid them now.

Sit – Los Angeles Rams @ Arizona Cardinals: The San Francisco 49ers have been arguably the best defense all season and the Cardinals hung 51 points on them in two games. Given how the Rams have played, I’m not going to be starting them against the presumed rookie of the year in Kyler Murray.

Sit – New England Patriots @ Houston Texans: Last week, I played the New England Patriots in spite of the matchup, because of the weather. This week, I’m much more nervous to play them on the road against the Houston Texans. As great as New England’s defense has been all year, Deshaun Watson feels like one of the few quarterbacks who could hang a good game on them. Only if I locked down a fantastic streamer would I consider benching them though.

Sit – Seattle Seahawks vs Minnesota Vikings: The Seahawks defense has played better lately, but it’s still not enough for me to consider starting them against the high powered Vikings offense. Coming off two top 5 defensive performances for fantasy football, it’s hard to sit the Seahawks, but unless Kirk Cousins implodes during primetime (which is possible), the Seahawks will likely disappoint for fantasy owners.
