WWE NXT Live On USA 10/2 Review

The third week of the Black and Yellow brand on USA Network and the first time NXT was two full hours only on USA. And with competition on another network in the same timeslot, NXT had to make some huge waves in this new Wednesday Night Wrestling War.

How did this 2-hour LIVE episode go? Let’s break it all down:

Hour One:

Adam Cole vs Matt Riddle for the NXT Championship

Two of the best fight for the best championship in NXT and for this match to be commercial-free, this was a masterpiece. These two are so great in the ring individually but together, they told a story. Riddle wouldn’t give up; Cole wouldn’t go down. Riddle used every submission and hold in his arsenal and Cole used all his endurance to ultimately prevail with the Last Shot knee to the back of Riddle’s head for the win.

This was absolutely brilliant.

Grade: A

Shock NXT Return

But wait, we’re not done with Adam Cole because just as Cole was celebrating his title defense, Finn Balor, yes, I said FINN BALOR came out to confront Cole in the ring and said specifically, “As of now, Finn Balor is N-X-T.” That is a clear declaration that Balor will be in NXT for a while after his main roster run has been less than stellar. Maybe this is a way to reinvigorate his WWE career and with guys like Velveteen Dream, Pete Dunne, Keith Lee, and Johnny Gargano, the return of Balor to NXT is HUGE.

Dream Not Over

Speaking of The Velveteen Dream, he came out soon afterwards to declare that he would get his North American Championship back from Roderick Strong as soon as he gets the opportunity and that opportunity will be soon. This man can cut such a wonderful promo and the rematch should be great as well.

Io Shirai vs Mia Yim

The Evil Genius Of The Sky vs The Head Baddie In Charge, two amazing competitors facing off one on one and this was a good match. They gave each other the best each other had and in the end, Shirai got the win over Yim with the moonsault. This was just more proof to show that the NXT Women’s Division alone has some of the best wrestlers in the entire world.

Grade: B

Johnny Gargano vs Shane Thorne

Over the last few weeks, Shane Thorne has been winning match after match and after putting his money where his mouth is, he got a shoe in the face in the form of a superkick by Johnny Wrestling, Johnny Gargano. Gargano, coming off losing the NXT Championship and failing to regain it, decided that he’ll stay in NXT and work his way back to the top.

Thorne and Gargano would have quite the contest on this episode of NXT. Anytime Gargano is in the ring, you can expect a never say die performance and that’s what happened here. Shane Thorne gave it his all, impressive through the match but Johnny Wrestling wouldn’t go down. Gargano won with the DIY Superkick for the win.

Grade: B

Hour Two:

Candice LeRae vs Shayna Baszler for the NXT Women’s Championship

The Girl Next Door vs The Unstoppable Champion. The Girl With Heart And Skill vs The Submission Magician. These two are some of the best that WWE has in their company and definitely some of the best in NXT. Candice LeRae didn’t want to give up. She gave Baszler everything she could handle but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Shayna got the submission win and retains the NXT Women’s Championship.

Grade: B

Pete Dunne vs Danny Burch

Two badass dudes from the UK in a fight is all right for the NXT Universe. The Bruiserweight vs The Brawler and this was a rematch from a WWE United Kingdom Championship match from early in Pete Dunne’s long championship reign. That match was wonderful, and this match was no different. These two broke one another down. In the end, it was Dunne with the Bitter End to get the win.

As the match ended, Dunne’s celebration was interrupted by The Archer Of Infamy, Damian Priest, who came from behind and punched Dunne in the mouth as he turned around. This is going to set up a match and I would love to see those two get it on in the ring.

Grade C+

The Undisputed Era vs The Street Profits for the NXT Tag Team Championship

Two of the hottest teams in NXT and WWE have their rematch for the NXT Tag Team Championship and it was just as good if not better than their last contest. Dawkins is underrated, Ford is a star and O’Reilly and Fish are sensational in the ring together. In the end, Roderick Strong got involved which allowed Fish and O’Reilly to hit the High/Low to Ford and pinned him for the win. What a sensational match these two teams put on.

Grade: A

Back For Goldie

As The Undisputed Era celebrated, Adam Cole comes out to celebrate as well but as he’s heading to the ring, Tommaso Ciampa, that sinister Blackheart, returned to NXT from months of injury. He crept out and slowly circled Cole creepily look at his Goldie and wanting it back. It is great to see Ciampa back and it is only a matter of time before Ciampa vs Cole happens and it will be wonderful.

So NXT on USA definitely impressed on this episode as they do on every episode and multiple storylines are being weaved through NXT. Overall Grade: B+

Easily the better show of the night.

Damian Priest and Pete Dunne, Walter and Kushida (who have a match next week), as well as Drew Gulak and Lio Rush and the big storyline…Adam Cole, Finn Balor, and Tommaso Ciampa.
